The Nursing Supervisor is a professional, registered nurse who is a skilled communicator, collaborator and authentic leader. The Supervisor supports the organization in the execution of the nursing strategic plan and priorities, actively participates in unit and hospital decision-making and provides meaningful recognition to others.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Nursing Supervisor at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Leadership/Human Resource Management
  • In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the Supervisor participates with recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Assist with unit huddles and leader rounding with employees.
  • Participates with unit goal creation which are reflective of the hospital goals as well as the mission and vision of Hackensack Meridian Health.
  • Participate or lead when appropriate: evidenced-based practice projects or research.
  • Participate or lead when appropriate: unit-based or hospital based shared governance committees or councils.
  • Resolve conflicts and facilitates constructive resolutions and positive outcomes if possible.
  • Complete employee corrective action plans/counseling as necessary.
  • Adhere to HMH Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Prepare and conduct periodic performance evaluations to assigned staff members.
  • Contribute to and/or monitors the unit orientation process of all roles as necessary.
  • Participate with and models the importance of employee recognition.
  • Model cultural competence, social justice and fairness, and capitalizes on generational diversity to foster highly effective work groups.
  • Financial Management
  • The Supervisor collaborates with the Nurse Manager for efficient fiscal management of departmental activities to ensure proper utilization of hospital resources:
  • Participates in Payroll, Staff Scheduling and daily staffing needs.
  • Assists in the management of the department budget,monitors business intelligence for the unit.
  • Maximizes care efficiency and throughput.
  • Understands the relationship between value-based purchasing and quality outcomes with revenue and reimbursement.
  • Monitors unit staffing productivity and flexes staff accordingly.
  • Quality and Safety/Performance Improvement
  • In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the Supervisor will optimize the patient and family experience of care.
  • Lead Multidisciplinary Rounds. 
  • Ensure unit-based performance improvement monitoring is completed, trended and reported internal and external to the unit.
  • Lead or participates with quality improvement projects.
  • Lead or conducts root cause analysis investigations.
  • Assure unit regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in staff education and competency.
  • Serve as a role model to others and mentor new employees and new Charge RNs.

Qualifications

  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License required
  • AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, MSN preferred
  • Previous supervisory or charge nurse experience preferred
  • Minimum 3 years recent nursing experience in respective specialty or equivalent (exceptions may be made for internal candidates on a case by case basis (i.e. the candidate has a history of hospital administration education/experience).
  • National Certification acceptable to the Magnet Recognition Program and appropriate to your current specialty (within two years of hire)
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs, a strong sense of accountability for improving the lives of our patients and their caregivers, an exceptional focus on teamwork, dedication to ongoing education and the ability and passion to deliver the highest quality of care based on a strong sense of patient focus are all required.
