The GPS BIA team (Global Product Development and Supply Business Insights and Analytics) partners with the BMS GPS organization to answer key business questions that drive business strategy using advanced data analytics and data science. The Associate Director, GPS Biologics Analytics will lead the development of advanced data analytic tools to answer business strategy questions within the Biologics Operating Unit, responsible for the manufacture of Biologics Drug Substance and Drug Product.

This role will be the primary BIA contact for the Devens, MA manufacturing site and lead Analytics activities supporting this site. The Associate Director work with the broader BIA team and site leadership to define and execute a strategy for site Analytics. This role will be responsible for managing and expanding a portion of the team’s Book of Work focused on the Devens manufacturing site. The Associate Director will also work with other team leaders to define the Biologics Analytics overall strategy. A successful candidate must have the skill and experience to work independently with site leaders and the Biologics Analytics team to define strategy, charter projects, and execute against an agreed book of work.

A successful candidate has experience broadly in biopharmaceutical manufacturing or in similar functions such as Supply Chain, Quality, or Process Development. The successful candidate also has expertise in one or more of the following areas: decision analysis, data analytics, data visualization, statistics, machine learning, predictive modeling, artificial intelligence, Python and R coding. Experience presenting insights and setting strategies with Executive stakeholders is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

The Associate Director, Biologics Analytics will partner with the Biologics Operating Unit and Business Insights and Analytics (BIA) stakeholders to establish core capabilities within the team, namely:

  • Supporting Business Decisions – Work closely with Devens Manufacturing senior leaders to proactively identify and address priority business questions.
  • Driving Analytics and Capabilities – Answer key business questions using innovative analytic and data science techniques, assist with establishing core analytical and data science capabilities, standards, processes and methodologies for the team.
  • Driving Team Productivity and Operational Excellence – Play a critical role in managing team productivity, timeliness and quality of deliverables. Ensure consistent adoption of standards, processes and methodologies by contracted or other team staff. Continuously seek opportunities and approaches for enhancing the team’s overall productivity.

Supporting Business Decisions:

  • Identifies and contextualizes critical business issues, working to embed an objective and unbiased point of view into the business conversation.
  • Drives the application of fact-based decision making for key questions within the Devens Manufacturing Site.
  • Develops and maintains a deep understanding of functional area business priorities, meeting agreed upon analytics deliverables / timing.
  • Opportunistically identifies how analytics can solve stakeholder business problems and influences senior leaders to adopt analytics-derived insights.
  • Works with functional leader to define team’s strategy.
  • Builds and owns relationship with multiple key stakeholders.

Driving Analytics and Capabilities:

  • Leads the development and implementation of a data analytics roadmap for the Devens Biologics Manufacturing Site.
  • Drives multiple capability builds in support of roadmap implementation.
  • Leads cross-functional projects across GPS BIA and the broader BIA organization that drive organizational integration and operational excellence.
  • Designs, develops and implements a broad array of business analytics that solve complex problems in a computationally efficient and statistically effective manner. 
  • Identifies new opportunities to further leverage analytics, data and analytical tools. Proactively manages planned and ad hoc analytics requests, ensuring consistent quality and timeliness in delivery to business stakeholders.
  • Ensures best practice adoption within stated areas of responsibility, applying appropriate levels of technical oversight, standardization and subject matter expertise.

Driving Team Productivity and Operational Excellence:

  • Manages and expands the team’s Book of Work that focuses on the Devens Biologics Manufacturing Site.
  • Coordinates a matrix team of internal data scientists across the global BIA Team.
  • Conducts detailed team walkthroughs and peer review of team’s work to ensure quality, cross training and knowledge management within the team.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in a scientific or quantitative major required; advanced degree (Master or PhD) preferred; Operations Research background preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience developing and using advanced analytics and reporting techniques; relevant experience in biopharmaceutical industry preferred.
  • Experience with data science solutions including data engineering, data visualization, statistical analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, predictive modeling, machine learning, etc.
  • Ability to architect analytics and/or data science solutions
  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects and priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, team building, written and verbal communication skills to ensure effective collaborations within matrix teams.
  • Experience in leveraging methods such as Design Thinking and Human Center Design to generate high value questions preferred.
  • Ability to develop and implement production-ready analytic and data science solutions.
