Vaccine Medical Science Liaison (ワクチン・メディカルサイエンスリエゾン)

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-facing role whose main objectives are to:

1. exhibit a high degree of scientific and clinical knowledge, i.e. a robust knowledge of diseases, vaccinology, product development, clinical trials

2. exhibit a high degree of knowledge of healthcare and payer environment, medical practice and regulatory frameworks, public health priorities, and vaccine guideline development

3. facilitate timely, appropriate, balanced, credible, robust, long-term scientific exchanges with influential external experts and decision-makers to enhance the understanding of the scientific and medical value of our products with no sharing of product promotional information

4. develop robust evidence generation plans to enhance the value of our products in a real-world setting

5. demonstrate operational understanding and risk management by ensuring excellence in execution of all governance processes

6. develop insights that deepen our understanding of the needs of patients, consumers, regulators, payers, and healthcare providers and proactively identifies unmet needs

In addition, the MSL is expected to build strong internal relationships with colleagues in Medical Affairs and Commercial Operations, while maintaining full compliance with all relevant company, industry, legal, and regulatory requirements. The insights gained by the MSL while engaging with KOLs are to be shared with the broader organization in order to contribute to the enhancement of messages, plans, and strategy.

The MSL will leverage existing educational slide decks developed internally and will follow all applicable internal procedures for the review and approval of any education material he/she adapts.

Engages external stakeholders on medical and scientific information in one-on-one interactions and group settings, exhibiting excellent scientific and clinical knowledge

  • Exhibits strong knowledge of relevant diseases, vaccine, healthcare environment, competitors; can articulate the medical and scientific value of our vaccines
  • Identifies, profiles, and prioritizes stakeholders while looking for opportunities to collaborate
  • Effectively creates territory and individual KOL medical engagement plans consistent with country, regional and global medical affairs priorities
  • Engages with appropriate stakeholders on medical/clinical/epidemiologic/scientific topics to advance understanding of the disease/vaccine, sharing information and answering questions based on approved material within Regulatory guidelines
  • Engages with appropriate stakeholders concerning the state of vaccine policies as they relate to immunization practices at a local, state, regional, federal, or national level.
  • Establishes robust, long-term relationships as peer-to-peer thought stakeholder partners
  • Effectively conducts and follows up on stakeholder interactions:
  • Attends and follows up on scientific congresses, symposia, or other events
  • Organizes educational meetings or local scientific advisory boards
  • During customer interactions, demonstrates key skills, including Probing, Managing Questions, and Advancing Understanding to effectively facilitate and support valuable engagements

Gathers data and generates insights from stakeholder interactions and provides feedback to the organization

  • Collects feedback/reactions from stakeholders, aggregating providers’ and patients' (indirectly) opinions towards disease/products/immunization policies
  • Develops insights that deepen our understanding of the needs and opinions of external stakeholders, contributing to enhancement of messages, plans, strategy, systems, and new vaccine development
  • Uses feedback tools/mechanisms to provide data and insights on interactions
  • Proactively identifies unmet needs that could be addressed through e.g. novel indications, combinations or formulations, etc.

Collaborates routinely and effectively with internal stakeholders

  • Partners with Franchises, ComOps, Business Development, IO, Regulatory, etc. to facilitate diligence reviews, medical and safety evaluation, product positioning, lifecycle evidence planning, and compliance needs
  • Develops, organizes, and distributes relevant scientific and medical information to internal stakeholders
  • Trains or advises internal stakeholders
  • Contributes to the creation of material for internal and external stakeholders where applicable, following internal Sanofi policies, and Federal and National Policies as applicable

Supports evidence-generation activities by aiding in data acquisition and identifying opportunities for further data collection

  • Monitors disease epidemiology and provides support when needed on various types of studies
  • Identifies data collection opportunities

Education/experience

Bachelor’s degree in life science

Experience in pharmaceutical company more than three years

Preferred experience

Academic degree: e.g. Master, PhD

Medical qualification: e.g. pharmacist, nurse

Research experience in related areas

Language skill

Japanese: Native-speaker level capability

English: Able to communicate in English with global and regional country medical teams

MSL needs to travel substantially given the field-facing nature of the role
