Scientist, Mass Spectrometry

This role is based onsite in Redwood City (Redwood Shores), California

The Role & The Team 

Reporting to the Associate Director of Mass Spectrometry, we are seeking an exceptional Scientist to join our Mass Spectrometry team based in our Redwood Shores facility. This group implements and develops the newest methods for proteomics molecular profiling leveraging Seer’s proprietary technology platform and the latest generation of mass spectrometers. The driving focus of this team, working closely with the data science and bioassay groups, is to acquire as much molecular profiling data as possible from Seer-technology derived samples in order to develop information that is key to a variety of downstream utility and value propositions. 

Seer’s new Mass Spectrometry Scientist will have a track record of accomplishments in academia or in the life sciences/pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. The successful candidate is likely to have a background in a bench laboratory scientific discipline such as biochemistry, molecular biology, or analytical chemistry, with a preferred 5 years of hands-on experience with mass spectrometry. 

Responsibilities & Goals 

The Mass Spectrometry group is focused on using the latest Mass Spectrometry (MS) and associated instrumentation for proteomics molecular profiling. Areas of specific responsibility and attention will include: 

  • Operate sophisticated analytical equipment including HPLCs and mass spectrometers in our centralized MS lab that supports Seer R&D, Product Development and Seer Technology Access Center (STAC) projects..
  • Participate in LCMS methods development and validation on Bruker, Thermo and Sciex platforms.
  • Use remote communication tools to connect with core lab in Redwood Shores, CA, for development and implementation.
  • MS data processing and data analysis skills across a variety of key metrics such as precursors, peptides and protein counts, intensities, etc. a must.
  • Use and maintain standard molecular biological laboratory equipment such as pipettes, centrifuges, pH meters, sonicator, etc.
  • Prepare laboratory reagents and buffers.
  • Carefully perform procedures and analysis on experimental samples derived from blood and blood products, urine, saliva, and other biological fluids or tissues.
  • Perform routine calculations, data entry, and lab notebook maintenance, including electronic notebooks and other data annotation, curation, and storage formats.
  • Prepare samples (biological fluids) for analytical measurement.
  • Work closely with the data science group as well as interact, collaborate, and support other functional teams within the broader Seer Research, Development, and Clinical framework. 

Background & Qualifications 

The successful candidate for the position of Mass Spectrometry Scientist will have deep hands-on experience with mass spectrometry with expertise spanning sample preparations through data analysis. Candidates must bring a strong entrepreneurial orientation along with teamwork skills and commitment to competing with the highest level of integrity and engagement. 

Requirements include: 

  • An MS or PhD degree and experience in a bench laboratory scientific discipline such as biochemistry, molecular biology, or analytical chemistry. 
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in an academic or life-sciences industry laboratory setting (biotech start-up experience preferred). 
  • Experience with MS instrumentation and laboratory instrumentation such as LCMS a must, (notably on Thermo, SCIEX, and/or Bruker platforms). 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated experience in cross-functional and timely communication. 
  • Strong and collaborative work ethic; must be a self-starter and persistent in achieving objectives to support Seer’s scientific and business goals. 
  • Must work well in a small team setting, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively, while meeting scheduled deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing
  • frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects with minimal force. Repetitive movements.
  • Ability to wear PPE for prolonged periods
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. 

At Seer, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $100,000 and $125,000, and will depend on the candidates education, skills, qualifications, experience, and location. This position is also eligible for bonus, benefits, and participation in Company’s stock option plan.
