At the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), you won’t be limited to the same boring routine. You’ll get to use your Java, MVC development skills to make a difference for Ohioans by supporting Ohio’s Child Welfare, Hearings, and Appeal Tracking applications. 

You’ll be part of a small, friendly Team of FULL-STACK Java developers. Your work will include supporting the entire software-development lifecycle, working with many tools and technologies, including: J2EE, WAS, JSF/Spring/Hibernate, Java Batch, JDBC, HTML, Javascript, JQuery, Springboot, XML, SOAP, Oracle Databases, SQL Server, Azure, GIT, Maven, Nexus, Jenkins, eLDAP, CMIS, FileNet, IIB, ACE, BAR, Splunk, Dynatrace, Veracode, and MORE! 

Lacking experience in some areas of web development? No problem. We have a wide range of skilled developers across ODJFS to support any needs. Your job also includes an annual training allowance to learn new skills, and to keep up with ever-changing technology, or get that certification you’ve been wanting. 

We are looking for an experienced Java web developer with good analytical and communication skills. Someone who has the ability to work independently, or with a team, and has a desire to satisfy requirements to create an exceptional customer experience.

This position requires little-to-no travel, and is currently 100% remote work (please review remote working notice above), collaborating through Teams. You’ll have plenty of exciting and challenging opportunities to grow as a web developer.

Qualifications

The following are the minimum qualifications for this position. For further consideration, applicants must clearly identify how qualifications are met within the education and/or experience sections of the application.

The ideal candidate, at minimum, must have the following: 

OPTION 1:

  • Completion of undergraduate core program in computer science or information systems;

AND 

  • 24 mos. combined work experience in any combination of the following: designing and performing systems analysis, developing and/or modifying programs for computer applications recommending application solutions and/or testing and correcting programs as it relates to testing and implementation and assisting with documentation
  • Including 12 mos. work experience in the primary technology as specified by the agency position description & job posting.

Option 2:

  • Completion of associate core program in computer science or information systems;

AND

  • 30 mos. combined work experience in any combination of the following: designing and performing systems analysis, developing and/or modifying programs for computer applications recommending application solutions and/or testing and correcting programs as it relates to testing and implementation and assisting with documentation
  • Including 12 mos. work experience in the primary technology as specified by the agency position description & job posting.

Option 3

  • 48 mos. combined work experience in any combination of the following: designing and performing systems analysis, developing and/or modifying programs for computer applications recommending application solutions and/or testing and correcting programs as it relates to testing and implementation and assisting with documentation
  • Including 12 mos. work experience in the primary technology as specified by the agency position description & job posting.

Or

  • Equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.

Major Worker Characteristics:

Knowledge of:

  • Computer and electronics, oral and written communication tools and techniques, customer support and personal service, state and agency policy, procedures and applicable laws*, vision, mission and goals of agency*, software development principles and methods for design, development, testing and implementation of new or modified software, commonly used query language, mathematic principles relative to assigned area in IT, IT principles, methods and practices in assigned specialty area, standard software validation tools, software distribution tools and mechanisms, technical writing and documentation practices.

Skill for:

  • Reading comprehension, speaking, service orientation, troubleshooting, critical thinking, and complex problem solving.

Ability to:

  • Stay abreast of current technologies in area of IT assigned, deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context, and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be set at step 1 of the pay range (currently $32.65 per hour). If this position is filled internally, the wage rate will be determined in accordance with such.

Subject to On-Call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Required to carry a pager/cellular phone as assigned.

Required to work overtime as assigned. 

Travel is required, as needed. Must provide own transportation. Or, in order to operate a state vehicle, you must have a valid driver's license from state of residence.
