Job Title: Electronics Intern

Location: Green Park, Reading

Our Opportunity

Are you new to the world of electronics and looking to develop some design experience? Are you keen to apply your theoretical knowledge to real problems and pick up some practical skills along the way? Thales OME designs a range of state-of-the-art solutions for some of the most technically advanced defence and security platforms in the world, and we are seeking talented interns who can apply their knowledge and skills in a summer placement.

This role is a 3-month summer placement lasting 12 weeks. It nominally starts in June and finishes in September but there is scope to adapt this to suit your course timetable. The placement is intended to give undergraduates in their 3rd or 4th years the opportunity to work with experienced engineers and apply concepts from their course to real-world applications. The role may cover any aspects of the product lifecycle, from concept studies, requirements, selection of technology, design and development, integration, validation and qualification.

This internship position is based in Reading. While there will be the opportunity to work from home, attendance on site will be necessary for lab work, such as circuit, assembly or system testing which is likely to form a significant part of the role. Being on site will also give you access to a significant pool of mentors, technical advisors and peers in order to establish your professional network.

At Thales we offer flexible smart working and a competitive benefits package including a healthcare plan, employee assistance programme, matched pension contributions, generous annual leave and additional flexible benefits.

Technical skills

The position would suit an undergraduate engineer with an interest in one or more of the following:

  • Electronics design (circuit simulation, block diagrams, schematic capture, etc.)
  • Electronics lab work (soldering, cable assembly, prototype build, etc.)
  • Safety electronics, thermal imagery, motor control or video processing

We are looking for an innovative and forward thinking individual with the following attributes:

  • Understanding of the principles of electronic circuits
  • ‘Big picture’ thinking: the ability to understand the broader context of a task
  • Enthusiasm and a proactive approach
  • Good organisational and time-management skills
  • Strong analytical reasoning skills
  • Experience of working in a team

Residency Restrictions apply with unrestricted right to work in the UK required.

Minimum educational requirements

You will currently be undertaking an undergraduate degree in a scientific or engineering subject with strong bias towards electronics.

In line with Thales' Baseline Security requirements, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment and/or education history for up to three years. Some vacancies may require full Security Clearance which can require further evidence to be provided.
