John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Vice PresidentforEnrollmentManagement and Student Affairs,andworkinginstrategicpartnershipwithothercampusconstituents,theAssistant Vice President and Dean of Students (AVP/DOS)is acriticalplayerinadvancingtheDivision'sstrategicvision, mission,andgoals.Thesuccessfulcandidateisahighlyexperiencedandcollaborativeprofessionalwhopossessesanethosofcareforstudents. The AVP/DOS possessesastrong leadership acumen, andextensiveknowledgeof higher education and studentaffairs principles,theories,andbestpractices thatpromoteastudent-centeredcampuscommunity.

The(AVP/DOS)willentertheDivisionatatimewherenew standards in educational support, including intrusive and high-impact strategies designed to enhance the complete student life cycle experience are needed and in high demand. The(AVP/DOS) must possess the skillset, ability, and desire to immerse themselves in the daily lives of students.

A key component of the job is the further development of student engagementandconnectiontothecampus. Asweenteranewphase "post-COVID",wewillneeda strategicthinkerwho will reimaginewhat student lifewilllooklike,and supportstudentsthrough every stepoftheirjourney.TheAVP/DOS willleveragetheiruniquestrengthstobuildonourrecordofsuccess towardourvisionof beinganational leaderinpromotingstudent successinadiverse, urbancollegesetting.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Serveasthechiefstudentadvocate,educatingthecampuscommunityonvarioustrends relatedto studentrightsandresponsibilities, contributing to thedevelopmentand dissemination ofpolicesonstudentbehaviorand civility,andworkingadeptly in an environment of student social justice activism.
  • Superviseallstudentconductandjudicialissues,including disputemediation anddisciplinaryhearings within CUNYadministrative processes.
  • ServeastheChair of theBehavioralInterventionTeam effectivelymanagingstudent predicamentsboth proactivelyandinemergencies.
  • Provide vision andoversighttovariousStudent Affairsunits, includingbutnot limited to: The CenterforStudent InvolvementandLeadership,Accessibility Services, International Students Services,The Children’s Center, The Immigrant Student Success Center, The Woman’s Center for Gender Justice, The Office of Student Transition Programs, The LGBTQ+ Resource Center,and The Urban Male Initiative.
  • SupervisionofDirectorsincludes thedevelopment of annual andlong-termoperationalandstrategicgoals, assessment,and attention to developing external funding sources. Adept at staff development through coaching, encouragement, and performance evaluation.
  • Developpartnershipsinternal andexternaltothedivision to createvibrant, student-centered, learning-focused,andintentional co-curricular experiences.
  • Coordinatethepreparation ofgrant proposals toenhancestudentservicesandstudent successinpartnershipwithinstitutional advancement.
  • Provide strategic oversight and directionto keyinitiatives,includingCommencement,Divisionalcommittees and collaborativeprogrammatic efforts with academic affairs.
  • Maintain a visible and extensive in-person presence on campus,necessitatingfrequent eveningandweekendwork, including representing the Division of EMSA at various student events.
  • Represent the Vice President and the College at executive meetings on-campus and off campus CUNY-wide meetings in-person.
  • Perform other dutiesas assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years of related work experience preferably in a student affairs setting as a director or executive managerial role in student affairs. related work experience is required. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College

Preferred Qualifications:

Anadvanceddegree inhighereducationadministration,counseling,studentpersonnel,orcloselyrelatedfield;andatleasteightyearsofprogressively responsibleseniorlevelexperienceinstudentaffairs.

  • Excellentinterpersonal,organizational,communicationandleadershipskillsandtheabilitytoworkcollaborativelyandeffectivelywithstudents, faculty,staffandsenioradministration. Networking skills are essential.
  • Recenttraininginleadershipcompetenciesinstudentaffairs,especiallydispute resolution,socialjusticeandinclusion,lawandpolicy,student conduct and judicial affairs.
  • Experiencewithstrategic planningandgrantsmanagementishighlydesirable.
  • Demonstratestrongcommitmentto urbanhighereducationina multicultural,multiracial environment.
  • Demonstrateabilityinbudgetandresourceallocationandstrategicplanning,andaclearunderstandingoftheacademicprocess and its relationship to student issues.
  • Experience within a large multi-campus systemis highly desirable.
  • Demonstrate ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously and to formulate and execute effective action plans.
  • Ability to work well in an intense, fast-paced environment.
  • Able to recognize and/or recruit talented staff.
  • Expertise in diffusing and resolving conflict while remaining empathetic to all parties involved. Must have strong mediation skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness.
  • Ability to read, speak, and write in Spanish a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$150,000 - $170,000

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
