The Opportunity

Future focused and always one step ahead

The Contract Writer will, under limited supervision, review and/or draft accurate and timely reinsurance contract wordings that meet Munich Re group and local internal policies, procedures and industry standards. They will also ensure wordings are fully executed according to time frames set by Munich Re US (MRUS).

Key Responsibilities

  • Under limited supervision, review, analyze and draft reinsurance contract documentation for all lines of reinsurance business, and prepare ancillary documents as required, including letters of intent, special endorsements, etc., escalating to the Unit Manager or relevant authority as appropriate.
  • Participate in the creation of alternative wordings to simultaneously meet client needs and comply with General Underwriting Guidelines and market standard wordings .
  • Peer review and audit reinsurance contract wordings to ensure accuracy and adherence to unit quality assurance procedures
  • Consistently adhere to MRAm individual performance, productivity and customer (internal and external) satisfaction targets. 
  • Oversee diary process, ensure wordings are fully executed within approved time frames and document receipt.
  • Provide consultative guidance to Client Managers and Underwriters on the potential structure of non-routine contracts and endorsements.
  • Monitor industry changes and trends, as well as MRM/MRAm contract policy changes
  • Conduct research or participate in special projects as assigned
  • Participate, as needed, in peer reviews of contracts drafted by other contract writers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, risk management, or related field
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school a plus
  • 3+ years of insurance and/or reinsurance experience preferred, including 1+ year of contract drafting and/or legal experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of reinsurance principles and documents
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of contract clauses and variations, types of reinsurance and structure of programs (i.e., how the facultative and treaty portions of programs fit together)
  • Coordinate with Underwriting and Client Management in order to proactively identify potential contract wording issues and effectively use problem solving and sound business judgment to resolve those issues in compliance with contract wording policies and procedures
  • Interested in working with other functions to advance digital and data technology (software, analytics) utilized by the department
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting and claims principles
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and networking skills at all levels of organizations
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Proficient in the following Microsoft Office tools including Outlook; Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Able to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Able to manage time effectively, meet deadlines and budget targets
