Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Technology Management

The School of Professional Studies (SPS) at Columbia University invites applications for a full-time position at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Discipline to teach in the MS program in Technology Management (Applied Technologies). This position will begin on July 1, 2024, and is a full-time appointment with a multi-year renewal contingent on successful review.

We are seeking experienced technology practitioner-scholars to contribute their expertise, energy, and technical knowledge toward forging the next generation of applied technology leaders, equipped to lead teams that design, deploy, and direct technology towards improving organizational operations, economic sustainability, positive social impact, and improved outcomes for individuals, communities, and societies. Functionally fluent technology leaders with subject-matter expertise, applied experience, and a record of thought leadership in at least one of the following areas are encouraged to apply: computer science/engineering, information science/systems, applied data sciences, systems risk assessments, technology operations, public interest/civic technologies, technology policy/regulations/governance, technology-focused business administration, human-centered and/or design-thinking practices, social/behavioral sciences or another area related to applied technologies and/or responsible technology leadership. 

The successful candidate will teach three courses in both the fall and spring semesters (i.e., a 3:3 course load), and must have demonstrated capability to teach in multiple modalities including face-to-face, synchronous and asynchronous online, and hybrid. Expertise in instructional technology is expected. Student populations include emerging to experienced professionals, studying in full-time, part-time, and executive formats.

The successful candidate should also be capable of advancing the program's academic mission. Additional responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: advising, active participation in curriculum and program development and evaluation, designing and teaching classes in collaboration with other program faculty, participating in faculty recruitment and evaluation, enhancing the program's reputation and expanding its network, development and execution of strategies to support students as they transition to alumni, and serving on SPS and University-wide governance and other committees.

The Master of Science in Technology Management (Technology Leadership) program at Columbia University is an evolving program designed to attract both experienced junior and mid-career technology practitioners seeking concrete leadership training within an applied technology learning ecosystem through either full-time, part-time or executive pathways. The program combines core technology fundamentals, adaptive curricular systems to integrate changes in the field, and a mentor/cohort model whose culture is defined by the collaborative, agile, iterative practices that mirror the broader profession.

The ideal candidate will hold a doctoral degree, terminal degree, or its professional equivalent as a practitioner in computer science/engineering, information science/systems, applied data sciences, systems risk assessments, technology operations, public interest/civic technologies, technology policy/regulations/governance, technology-focused business administration, human-centered and/or design-thinking practices, social/behavioral sciences or another area related to applied technologies and/or leadership in technology operations. They will also exhibit a commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, instructional design, professional practice and scholarship. All applicants must have a BA/BS.

Candidates should have a background as a practitioner and a scholar, including at least five years of applied experience working as an organizational leader with accountability for delivering strategic communication plans. They will have a demonstrated record of collaboration and collegiality, share our core values of respect and professionalism, and help build a culture of academic rigor and care for students. 

Candidates at the rank of Senior Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, a superlative teaching record, and documented evidence of excellence in carrying out administrative or other department responsibilities. 

Candidates at the rank of Lecturer in Discipline are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of excellence, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the given field.
