How you make a difference

As the Vice President, Senior Associate General Counsel, Risk Management, you will be entrusted with the strategic direction and tactical acumen necessary to navigate a diverse range of professional liability claims. Your role extends beyond claims management to include oversight of the Company's insurance initiatives, ensuring comprehensive risk mitigation strategies. Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer, you will assume a pivotal position in the organization, overseeing the entirety of the company's risk management portfolio with a focus on effective handling and management of professional liability matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a skilled team of claims handlers, overseeing litigation and potential compensable events, while implementing innovative strategies to minimize the Company's professional liability exposure and expenditures.
  • Utilize strong analytical skills to examine data, predict future exposure, and devise strategies aimed at reducing future claims and expenses, contributing to the enhancement of the Company's overall services.
  • Navigate a diverse professional liability claims portfolio, including "pro se" claims based on alleged violations of the 8th Amendment, 42 U.S.C. 1983, and similar causes of action, as well as claims represented by counsel arising from the healthcare services provided to patients in correctional facilities.
  • Collaborate with numerous external law firms across the geographic service platform in the defense of professional liability claims, ensuring a coordinated and effective legal response.
  • Oversee the Clinical Risk Management department, coordinating with a specialized correctional health clinical claims director nurse and collaborating with operational, clinical, and compliance leaders to establish and manage a comprehensive risk management model aligned with the Company's commitment to "Always Do The Right Thing."

Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • Graduate of ABA-accredited law school.

Experience

  • Minimum of 15+ years of legal experience in litigation, and litigation and risk management, preferably in both a law firm and in-house environment; healthcare industry experience required.
  • Experience working with healthcare clients is preferred, working knowledge of common Federal healthcare regulatory elements (HIPAA, Fraud/Abuse/Waste avoidance, etc.)
  • Expertise and significant experience in handling medical malpractice litigation and professional liability claims management is a requirement of the position.
  • Experience managing and defending 8th Amendment, 42 USC 1983 and similar cases is highly desirable.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensed to practice law and admitted to the bar in at least one state or the District of Columbia
  • Eligible for admission as an In-House Counsel in the state of Tennessee.

Compliance

  • Must remain in good standing with the Board of Professional Responsibility.
