Post-Doctoral Researcher/Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Engineering and Architecture

University College Cork

22 Months, Fixed-Term, Whole-time Post

Please note that this position can be filled at Post-Doctoral or Senior Post-Doctoral level, depending on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Position Summary

Dr Marguerite Nyhan would like to invite applications for a fully funded Postdoctoral or Senior Postdoctoral research position with the CREATIVE C-CHANGE project. The appointed researcher will conduct research on the impact of the Creative Climate Action initiative on climate change awareness, engagement and action in Ireland. The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team to deliver an innovative programme of research to explore the role of cultural and creative interventions in promoting dialogue and engaging diverse audiences in new responses to climate change.

The CREATIVE C-CHANGE project will develop and implement a framework for evaluating the impact of creative and performative climate action projects that have been funded under the Creative Climate Action national initiative. This was launched by Creative Ireland within the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media in collaboration with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The work includes an assessment of impacts in terms of engagement with multiple stakeholders, communities and the broader public. Such impacts may entail a change in awareness, engagement, attitudes, perceptions and/or behaviour related to climate change and climate change action, as well as other emergent societal impact processes. A key innovation will be to extend conventional parameters for evaluating the arts in climate change in terms of communication and outreach and embrace the potential of the arts as co-generators of knowledge, climate action and transformative change. This post-doctoral/senior post-doctoral researcher will combine wider cross-disciplinary insights to co-develop and refine a methodology for assessing the impact of Creative Climate Action initiatives on public awareness and attitudes to climate change and climate change action, alongside other emergent indicators. This will include the planning, design and implementation of data collection efforts (including potential surveys and focus group sessions). The evaluation process will further involve in-depth analyses of a sample of initiatives. Dr Marguerite Nyhan who leads the CREATIVE C-CHANGE project is an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Futures & Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering & Architecture at University College Cork (UCC).

The Future Sustainability Research Group

The Future Sustainability Research Group investigates and develops intelligent solutions for sustainable, net zero, healthy, liveable and equitable cities of the future. Led by Dr Marguerite Nyhan, the group employs state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies from a number of disciplines including engineering, computer science, urban planning, public health and sociology to achieve its vision. The Future Sustainability Research Group sits within the School of Engineering & Architecture and the Environmental Research Institute at UCC.

As the challenges of urbanisation, environmental degradation and climate change are complex and multi-faceted, the Future Sustainability Research Group recognises that pathways towards a sustainable future will only be achieved by successfully harnessing emerging technologies including data analytics and artificial intelligence; by embracing complexity; by fostering a systems thinking approach and by engaging with people, policymakers and government. Its research falls under the themes of ‘Intelligent & Technology-Driven Solutions for Sustainable Future Cities’ and ‘Technology, Policy & Society’. See www.nyhanlab.org for more details.

Applications are invited from candidates with relevant PhD qualification and experience of research on the social aspects of climate change research.
