Responsibilities

The Editor-in-Chief/Assistant Director of University Advancement Communications is responsible for planning, administering, reviewing, and evaluating all activities related to: Florida State’s official advancement publication, VIRES magazine. Responsible for the development and oversight of design, production timelines, finances and budgets, and print and digital distribution of the magazine, and related projects. Responsible for program design and project management of the magazine, and related projects including goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and benchmarking. Maintains relationships with internal stakeholders such as college partners and donors, and external stakeholders such as advertisers, freelance professionals, and printers. This position will report directly to the Senior Director of University Advancement Communications.

Editor in Chief of VIRES Magazine

  • In partnership with the Sr. Director of University Advancement Communications, develop and implement strategies and best practices for 2x/year advancement magazine.
  • Develop, produce and/or assign writing, photography, and video content for the print magazine and digital promotion.
  • Provide information on readership, expenditures, revenue, and other assessments to the Director of Communications.
  • Implement a clear production calendar with deadlines for colleagues.
  • Manage finances and budgets for VIRES publication and promotion.
  • Work with Sr. Director of University Advancement Communications on vendor selection to enhance the quality of the publication.

Promotion

  • Support efforts of FSUAA and Foundation departments through print and digital communications.
  • Collaborate with FSUAA departments to support the communication of awards, scholarship stories, board highlights, young alumni and alumni network engagement across various platforms and media as part of overall strategy.
  • Provide storyboards and scripts for alumni events.
  • Provide editorial and proofreading services to FSUAA departments’ marketing and communications materials.

Content: 

  • Develop content for FSUAA print and digital communications as needed.
  • Actively pursue FSU interest stories that bring pride to the university through Google alerts or other methods.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and FSU University Communications to identify and promote FSU alumni, advancement and FSU points of pride.
  • Plan and assign/produce multimedia content packages that advance the mission of the FSUAA and tell the stories of FSU Alumni.
  • Guide the creation, management and assessment of video, audio, web and magazine content throughout the calendar year.
  • Evaluate communications tactics, including performance, optimization strategies, and recommendations for improvement.

Professional Development

  • Engage with university communicators and peers at other institutions to identify best practices, and when able, attend conference/webinars/trainings to improve skill and ability and share with team members.
  • When interns are placed in UA Communications, work with teammates to provide guidance and development opportunities for FSU student interns.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience 
  • Experience with magazine publication
