UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing technology solutions to all three campuses, UW medical centers, and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with university partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW. The Administrative Systems (AS) unit within UW-IT’s Data and Applications (D&A) division provides system design, development, and software engineering support for systems that contribute to the administrative and research missions of the University. AS’s integrated technologies are designed for business and administrative success. Thoughtfully designed, well-executed business applications are developed through partnerships with central units for university-wide usage. Our solutions are secure, integrated, and built on enterprise-class infrastructure that is scalable and sustainable; they are accessible, easy to use, standards-compliant, fault-tolerant, recoverable, and auditable.

To be successful, the Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) must have experience with end-to-end quality assurance and testing efforts within a complex enterprise-level environment and be experienced with automated testing processes and tools. They must also have experience working closely with development teams and deployment managers throughout the testing lifecycle, to ensure that the overall quality of the delivered solution is aligned with business expectations.

The SDET participates in all aspects of the software development lifecycle and leads others to improve practices, processes, and tools for development, testing and versioning, continuous integration, automated release and deployment of service changes, and operations and monitoring. They are expected to contribute ideas and data to inform strategy, and to promote learning and continual improvement.

As a hands-on SDET, you will make a significant impact by improving efficiency and approach to testing. Working from customer needs, you will identify the right sets of tools to build to achieve the best quality and customer experience. You are responsible for developing, maintaining and executing automated and manual tests to ensure the quality of our applications. You will lead test automation efforts for critical and complex technical projects spanning multiple service teams. You will be responsible for driving improvements in test tools, test environments and reporting mechanisms as well as influence the implementation of the right solutions.

An SDET quality assurance engineer provides a vital link between the customer’s requirements and the developing solution. To provide this link, the SDET should be involved in the gathering of customer requirements to both ensure that the requirements are clear and that the solution meets the requirements in a consistent and usable fashion.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Technology, or Engineering, or a related field or experience.

Four (4) years’ experience end-to-end testing in a multi-tiered client server environment.

Experience working with SQL and relational databases.

Knowledge of Object Oriented Programming Languages (C#).

Familiarity with testing for multiple web browsers, including Edge, Firefox, Chrome.

Exposure to software release/build process/SDLC.

Experience using bug tracking software.

Experience designing and implementing end-to-end quality assurance and testing methodology for enterprise solutions.

Experience in testing efforts across a variety of platforms, operating systems and browser clients.

Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.

Additional Minimums

Familiarity with Microsoft technologies, environments and tools.

Solid grounding in computer science and software testing concepts (OO, data/code separation, types of testing).

Proven ability to write clear, concise documentation.

Ability to troubleshoot application installation and development/test environment configuration issues.

Ability to understand end user and product usage scenarios for use in the design and conduct of software testing.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED:

Experience reviewing requirements and developing test cases based on those requirements.

Experience working with automated software testing applications as well as producing automated test scripts and tools.

Extensive experience testing within in-house and vendor software environments both on site and in cloud environments.

Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise-wide relational databases, scripting languages, and SQL Server.

Experience in testing web applications on multiple platforms and browsers, and web services.

Experience testing on mobile devices including iOS and Android.

Knowledge of IT accessibility issues for users with disabilities; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to test content/applications with accessibility considerations.

Experience in Higher Education, preferably at a major research (R1) university.

Experience leading testing in an Agile software development environment.

Ability to train, mentor, and guide others.

Experience with Unit and Integration testing is a plus.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Work in an open office environment. This position involves responsibilities and occasional situations where work outside of standard business hours is required to respond to incidents or to meet critical deadlines. The work may be performed in a mix of office environment and telecommuting with manager approval.

This is an essential position and is required to report to work remotely when UW suspends operations.
