Team Profile: 

The Cyber, Data, Risk and Resilience (CDRR) organization within Technology at Morgan Stanley, provides first-line defenses for information and cyber security, fraud, resilience, response and recovery, and technology risk and controls. The organization also includes Morgan Stanley’s Firmwide Data Office, International Technology offices, and the Non-Financial Risk Technology organization. The combination of these groups, in close partnership with the business and technology teams, enhance the resilience of the Firm, address the complex and continuously evolving threat environment, drive compliance with policy and regulatory requirements, and ensure data governance, quality and security.

Position Description:

Non-Financial Risk Technology (NFRT) Tech at Morgan Stanley is looking to onboard an application support and SRE specialist for their Application and Data Engineering (ADE) group.

ADE provides application engineering, tooling, automation, and elevated production support services conforming to Morgan Stanley security blueprints and focused on performance, reliability, and scalability by understanding the technical requirement from application owners and business, participate in technical evaluation of vendors and vendor technologies, conduct proof of concept, packaging and deploying middleware products.

The team supports strategic initiatives like cloud migration, containerization, observability, SRE, agile transformation, build, automate, and manage services across NFRT.

This team also partners with central technology teams like Infrastructure, Security, Network, Database, and procurement to design and deliver solutions. The team leverages a variety of tools for platform design and application trouble shooting as they also provide level 2/3 support to the application operations team.

Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will be involved in application support, implementing SRE best practices, handling incidents, escalations, and problem management for NFRT Production plants. This includes application server administration, technical troubleshooting of infrastructure and user incidents.
  • Incorporate System Reliability Engineering implementation into the day-to-day role by developing automated solutions to long standing problems to ensuring minimal downtime and manual effort.
  • Strong infrastructure knowledge in Linux / Unix, Windows, Databases, Storage and Networking technologies.
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting tools, configuring application monitors using industry standard monitoring tools, as well as developing customized monitoring solutions.
  • Revisit SRE Metrics and confirm against the firm and department goals. 
  • Support vendor / vendor technology onboarding following the Morgan Stanley best practices and security blueprint.
  • Apply technical skills to automate daily support functions, improve system stability, support hygiene initiatives, and deliver innovation that creates efficiency and consistency.
  • The role requires availability for weekend and on-call support on a rotation basis and holiday coverage.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience of Linux 7.x operating system
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
  • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture, Distributed Systems, Scripting such as Python and shell, Relational database (e.g., Sybase, DB2, SQL, Postgres)
  • Hands-on experience of web servers (Apache / Nginx), Application Servers (Tomcat / JBoss) to include application integration, configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Hands-on experience Docker containers, Kubernetes, and SaaS platform integration
  • Clear concept of load balancer, web proxies and storage platforms like NAS / SAN from an implementation perspective only
  • Familiar with basic security policies for secure hosting solutions, Kerberos and standard encryption methodologies including SSL and TLS
  • Prior experience managing large web-based n-tier applications in secure environments on on-premise
  • Strong knowledge SRE Principles with grasp over tools / approach to apply them
  • Strong infrastructure knowledge in Linux / Unix admin, Storage, Networking and Web Technologies
  • Experience in troubleshooting Application Issues and Managing Incidents
  • Exposure to tools like Open Telemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Ansible
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Desired Skills:

  • Exposure to Big Data platforms like Hadoop / Cloudera and ELK Stack
  • Working knowledge of workflow orchestration tool like Airflow
  • Capacity planning and performance tuning exercise
  • On Premise deployment infrastructure knowledge 
  • Prior experience of working in a global financial organization
  • Exposure and experience messaging technology like Kafka
