University Advancement (UA) supports the entire CMU community in building relationships with key constituencies and securing the financial resources the university needs to continue its ascent. As the division grows, we are seeking a senior associate director, Advancement Communications and Marketing. Reporting to the executive director, Advancement Communications and Marketing, you will be responsible for researching, writing, editing and managing a variety of integrated communications projects for the University Advancement division. Projects will include fundraising collateral, solicitations, video shoots, social media and texting campaigns, press releases, feature stories, digital marketing and direct mail pieces, and website content with the goal of cultivating and stewarding significant philanthropic support and engagement for Carnegie Mellon and its mission and objectives. You will supervise one full-time staff member, as well as freelance writers. You will also work closely with colleagues on other teams across the division, including Development, Gift Planning, Donor Relations, Business Engagement, and Alumni and Constituent Engagement, among others.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Managing editorial calendar and leading content development that tells alumni, donor and other stories that advance division and university goals for engagement and fundraising.
  • Working closely with University Advancement partners to anticipate communications needs and delivering appropriate collateral.
  • Liaising and developing relationships with other content creators in University Communications and Marketing and the CMU colleges and schools.
  • Leading select print and digital communications and marketing projects from inception to completion.
  • Writing, editing, copyediting and proofreading materials for a variety of channels.
  • Managing established and cultivating new freelance writers.
  • Supervising video and photo shoots, in conjunction with ACM multimedia producer and design team.
  • Providing communications best practices, style and grammar guidance to junior members of the Advancement Communications and Marketing team, freelance writers, and division partners.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

You should be able to travel domestically and be willing to work outside of normal business hours as needed.

Qualifications 

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; preferably with a specialization in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.
  • Five to eight years of communications, marketing or journalism experience.
  • Experience in higher education and/or large institution fundraising preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices and metrics for communications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and web content management systems preferred.
