Your Impact

  • Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The successful candidate will work in close coordination with other Northeast District bridge/structural condition practice leaders to manage and deliver our bridge/structure condition inspection services in accordance with applicable industry/client standards.
  • Duties will include managing a local inspection group and ensuring that the group is properly trained and mentored to successfully deliver these services.
  • The successful candidate will develop and implement Business Development strategies for bridge and structural condition inspection and bridge load rating related projects. This will include evaluating transportation client capital programs to identify key pursuits and implement capture plans. This individual will be responsible for obtaining and utilizing data and client relationships to identify target contracts/projects and understand the capital programs of existing and potential clients throughout the six New England states.
  • Business development efforts will include writing qualification and technical proposals and participating in interviews.
  • This individual will perform project management and administrative duties, including preparation of cost proposals, project management and group management, including internal reporting to senior management.
  • In addition to bridge/structural condition inspection projects, the candidate will also work on a variety of other structural engineering projects, as needed to support of our transportation business line and to maintain technical relevance within the organization and with clients.
  • The individual will be supported by the local and national transportation business line managers and senior staff, and will organize business development efforts through active engagement with clients, to help grow our business and marketplace share in the New England Region
  • The ideal candidate will have broad-based, hands-on experience in structural engineering with an emphasis on bridge/structure condition inspection, and load rating projects/programs, existing familiarity with and relationships with local clients and the ability to manage internal staff. 
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for: 
  • Supervision and professional development of the technical staff assigned to the local group, including mentoring, training, coaching and performance reviews.
  • Project Management/ Project Delivery of medium to large transportation projects including technical, budget and schedule responsibilities and oversight.
  • Business Development (BD) in conjunction with regional BD & marketing staff, by establishing or continuing relationships with various clients in the region to secure backlog and assure future growth. 
  • Serve as Technical Lead for the local office bridge/structural condition inspection and load rating services.
  • Performing structural Inspection of bridges and transportation structures (vehicular, rail and transit facilities), and the identification and prioritization of repairs.
  • Establishing or continuing previously established relationships with various clients in the region to secure backlog and assure future growth. 
  • Professional development/mentoring and training of professional staff and assisting in finding excellent talent for future growth of staff within the region.
  • Based on guidance and support from WSP’s safety office, implement safety practices in accordance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations, as well as industry/client-specific protocols applicable to field condition inspection activities. WSP’s 
  • Management/review of structural engineering projects including scientific evaluation of the condition state, function and load carrying capacity of bridges and other structures, their individual components, as compared to their original design state and/or current standards.
  • Projects will primarily include transportation structures, including bridges of all types, culverts, and tunnels for vehicular, rail, and pedestrian service. This will include related structural systems such as retaining walls, towers, and overhead sign structures. In addition, inspection and evaluation of other structure types, such as buildings, dams, and hydraulic structures, piers\wharfs, etc. may be performed. 
  • Analysis and load rating of existing bridges (vehicular and rail) and structural systems
  • Asset Management needs review and implementation
  • Preparation and review of technical reports
  • Preparation of qualification packages, technical and cost proposals along with presentations for pursuits
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 12+ years of relevant post education experience in bridge design, construction, inspection, or other bridge related work.
  • Professional Engineer license in MA is required (multi-state preferred).
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, standard of care, and the application to permitting and project work-related issues.
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements, and the business impact upon the organization.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Familiarity with bridge inspection standards and protocols for the major New England transportation clients, including state transportation departments, commuter rail and transit agencies, port authorities, private railroads, as well as Federal agencies such as Amtrak and Army Corps of Engineers.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 Construction Certified
  • Current FHWA/NHI Bridge Inspection Training (2-week Bridge Safety Training and/or Refresher courses)
  • Additional FHWA/NHI Training – Tunnel, Fracture Critical, and Ancillary Structures
