Job Description

At Trainline, we place data at the core of what we do. Our vision is to build value creating Data Products, utilising AI and ML technologies to fuel data-driven innovation for growth within our company and throughout the industry. Our Data team is equipped with extensive experience and a broad spectrum of skills, covering areas such as Data Platform management, Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, and Data Science, all crucial for our data enabled value delivery. Our operating model embeds data delivery teams within each strategic theme at the company level. This integration ensures data is central to achieving our objectives and outcomes.

As a Principal Data Product Manager within the Life Time Value theme (a pivotal cross-functional strategic initiative), your mission is to drive our data product investments to help create deeply engaged and profitable users across all of our UK and International markets. As a true thought leader of this space your role will focus on building and strengthening our overall execution capabilities across Acquisition, Engagement and Monetisation and leading the way to make sure data is at the heart of what we do here.

In your capacity as Principal Data Product Manager, you will guide our data product portfolio's direction, accelerating the performance of our Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, AI, and ML teams. This role is central to forging strategic alliances with business stakeholders, capturing data-driven opportunities to boost value creation, and ensuring delivery prioritization and alignment with available resources.

In this role, you will partner with Data Science Lead for your business cross function area to spearhead strategic discussion on our data investment strategy, demonstrating an exceptional ability to set a vision and influence senior stakeholders to buy into the vision. You will advocate for high-priority initiatives, driving a culture of continuous improvement, and applying agile methodologies to maximise the return on our investments.

Working closely with the delivery lead for your data delivery team, you will manage significant projects, deeply exploring solution options to maximisng customer impact. Together with your team, you'll devise and implement detailed plans with clear milestones for monitoring progress and adapting strategies as necessary.

In our autonomous environment, as a Principal Data Product Manager, your influence and impact will be substantial. Your leadership will be crucial in pioneering innovations and integrating high-value data driven Life Time Value solutions, thus playing a vital role in our growth strategy, guiding execution, and promoting a culture of continuous learning in data products.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Data Product Manager, your enhanced responsibilities include;

  • Strategic Vision: Develop and champion a strategic vision for data driven acquisition, engagement and monetisation channels informed by global industry trends, the competitive landscape and the company's growth strategy. Ensure the Exec team and ELT align with and endorse this vision as a key strategy to achieve company objectives.
  • Stakeholder collaboration: Lead on stakeholder collaboration, guiding strategic discussions and decisions to assess data value opportunities, focusing on effort estimation, capacity planning, and prioritization to align with organisational goals. 
  • Value Proposition Development: In partnership with the business, craft compelling value hypothesis for all backlog items, identifying Commercial, Growth and Strategic benefits and have an investment portfolio that drives a nice balance of incremental gains and big swings of the bat!
  • Investment Advocacy: Take a lead role in advocating and deciding key investment priorities for your product area, playing a critical part in data planning cycles and influencing the direction of Engineering, Business Intelligence, AI and ML initiatives.
  • Project Leadership and Execution: As a leader, you will deliver data initiatives through efficient project execution, guided by a clear and visible execution roadmap that emphasizes agile value delivery milestones. Lead cross-functional collaborations beyond your immediate scope, thereby strengthening stakeholder trust through effective leadership.
  • Stakeholder Communication and Engagement: Ensure continuous, clear communication with all stakeholder’s level, ensuring alignment on roadmap, strategy and execution. Effectively manage any tactical replanning or strategic decision during delivery phases.
  • Outcome Ownership: Take ownership of Product performance and initiative outcomes using frameworks such as OKRs and Product scorecards. Analyse the real-world impact of deliverables against initial hypotheses for guided future prioritisation.
  • Continuous Improvement: Conduct periodic retrospectives on key deliverables to extract learnings for future planning.

Qualifications

  • University degree or equivalent, preferably in a quantitative field (such as economics, mathematics, engineering, finance etc.)
  • Minimum of 7 years in senior roles within data or technical product teams, with a focus on strategy setting, agile methodology, and leading complex, data-driven projects.
  • Proven experience or substantial exposure to marketing and growth platforms – this is essential – as your role will focus on how to optimise and improve platform performance using data
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distil complex concepts and influence strategic directions at all levels, including senior management.
  • Extensive experience in evaluating, measuring and communicating data product success and value delivery.
  • Extensive and proven experience using SQL to work with data
  • Excellent Excel skills; good PowerPoint skills
  • Experience of working with modern data platforms and technologies.
  • Experience with data scripting languages (e.g. SQL, Python, R etc.) or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R, SAS, or Matlab)
