The Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine is recruiting a full-time psychiatrist for the position of Medical Director and Vice Chief for the Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) Behavioral Health Services, with delegated authority from the Chief of the YNHH Behavioral Health Service Line (Chief BH) / Chair of the Yale Department of Psychiatry (YDP), and in collaboration with the YNHH Vice President/Executive Director for Behavioral Health (VP/ED BH). This position carries a faculty appointment within the Department of Psychiatry at the associate professor or professor level, depending upon the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations and the strategic development of the YNHH and the Yale-New Haven Health System (YNHHS) Behavioral Health Service Line. This position reports directly to the Chief of Behavioral Health on all matters related to YNHH/YNHHS and serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the Yale Department of Psychiatry. This position provides direct supervision to the Site Directors and the Section Chiefs (currently Inpatient, Outpatient, Psychological Medicine, Emergency Services, and Interventional Psychiatry) and either direct or indirect supervision to all medical staff and LIPs. In collaboration with the VP/ED BH, this position assigns administrative and clinical staff as required. The main duties of this position are outlined below.

Business Development / Program Development:

o Oversee program planning, development, and evaluation

o Develop evaluation criteria and measurements of the performance of services, programs, and clinical staff

o Serve on YNHH and YMG committees as required

Safety, Quality, and Patient Flow Initiatives:

o Monitor patient flow to and from all YNHHS programs, lead the Site Directors and Section Chiefs in supporting safe patient flow, and initiate programmatic changes to ensure safety, quality, and safe patient flow

o Ensure YDP support and compliance with CMS core measures, the Joint Commission compliance standards, and Department of Health regulations

o Initiate case reviews for adverse events and address underlying root causes

o Ensure compliance with YNHH Medical Staff Quality Committee

o Collaborate with the VP BH/ED through the Director of Behavioral Health Nursing to ensure compliance of CMS core measures, the Joint Commission compliance standards, and Department of Health regulations

o Ensure physician staff, LIPs, and resident’s model supportive behaviors such as unit rounding, rapid consultative response, and close collaboration with care coordinators and patient service managers

Patient Satisfaction and Service Excellence:

o Effectively develop, implement, and lead service excellence initiatives in collaboration with the VP BH/ED and YNHH leadership

o Position YNHH Behavioral Health Service Line as a leader in service excellence regionally and nationally

o Monitor and improve current YNHH BH measures of patient experience

o Lead the assessment and development of other novel measures of behavioral health outcomes

o Position YNHH to meet the demands of changing payment models under the Affordable Care Act

Physician Satisfaction:

o Identify and address concerns of the medical staff

o Establish an effective working relationship with full-time faculty, YNHH/NEMG physicians, clinical faculty, and community based physicians and will achieve an effective balance of promoting full time faculty growth and development while maintaining a harmonious relationship with YNHH/NEMG physicians, clinical faculty, and community physicians

o Model behavior of mutual respect for all staff members

o Lead recruitment of outstanding new professional staff (MD, LIP, and Ph.D)

Education/Training:

o Oversee and facilitate the YNHH Psychiatry educational mission (medical student, residency, fellowship, other professionals) in all of its settings in collaboration with the Yale Deputy Chair for Education and the Yale Psychiatry Graduate Education Committee

o Create the infrastructure (identification of a YNHH Education Director, insure the presence of appropriate clinical supervision, meetings, etc.) necessary to effectively implement the YNHH Psychiatry educational mission

o Ensure that YNHH Psychiatry is actively represented in the Graduate Education Committee of the Department of Psychiatry

o Work to improve the scope, quality, local reputation, and national prominence of YNHH as a site for the training of psychiatrists, psychologists, and related professions

Leadership:

o Support effective teamwork and collaboration between the YNHHS BH Sites and the clinical sections (Inpatient, Outpatient, Psychological Medicine, Emergency Psychiatry, and Interventional Psychiatry)

o Establish effective collaborations with leaders of other YDP/YNHH Departments and other stakeholders outside of the Yale community

o Serve as an advocate for the YDP/YNHH mission

o Excel at making complex decisions, problem solving, and collaboration.
