WERC (formerly Worldwide ERC), the global talent mobility industry’s premier trade organization, seeks a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to partner with the CEO and staff team to lead the organization into an exciting future.

The Chief Operating Officer will have the exciting opportunity to support and extend WERC’s mission, vision, and strategy as the organization leads the global talent mobility industry into the future. 

Responsibilities 

  • Report directly to the CEO, to lead the work of staff, committees, and volunteers in service of the industry and our membership.
  • Function in a Chief Financial Officer capacity in collaboration with the CEO and the Finance Committee.
  • Possess a solid understanding of matrix management, strong results orientation, and versatility to manage a range of responsibilities, including executive support, internal operations, stakeholder engagement, and strategic initiatives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Contribute to strategic thinking and future-focused planning and prioritization efforts of the CEO and the WERC Board of Directors.
  • In collaboration with the CEO and staff, drive action planning of programs and other initiatives that translate the board’s strategic thinking into action and outcomes. 
  • Drive the process for developing the organization’s annual operating budget, including the identification, selection, and engagement of resources or solutions within the parameters of the approved budget (i.e., operational planning).
  • Oversee team leads and staff, ensuring the execution of strategic priorities and projects as directed by the CEO and as approved by the board. 
  • Manage and optimize internal operations, streamlining processes to enhance organizational efficiency in a matrix structure. Motivate and guide teams comprised of members from various departments and disciplines.
  • Oversee special projects, ensuring timely completion and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Prioritize effectively, juggle competing deadlines, and manage resource allocation with agility.
  • Seek, learn, analyze, and apply subject matter knowledge related to WERC, the industry, and the goals and objectives of its global members. Become adept at the issues, environment, vocabulary, culture, and personas of membership.
  • Work with the CEO, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders to develop and nurture a culture of engaged volunteers, applying best practices to recruitment, engagement, and recognition.
  • Communicate effectively with leadership and all stakeholders on matters related to the organization; serve as the primary driver of communications (either directly or through others).

Leadership Duties 

  • Design the optimal team structure with staff and/or other resources) team to execute operations and advance strategic priorities within the parameters of the approved budget.
  • Prioritize the organization’s work effectively and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Create and nurture an environment for staff to be effective and engaged, including ensuring role clarity, expectations, performance management, and overall morale.
  • Ensure service excellence delivery to volunteers, members, customers, collaborators, funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Help staff develop the knowledge, competencies, and skills to perform their roles successfully.
  • Communicate expectations; surface and resolve conflict; and reward and recognize successes across the staff team.
  • Ensure accountability for all staff functions, actions, and outcomes.

Qualifications 

  • Proven experience in a senior-level executive support role or similar position.
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams.
  • Knowledge of the talent mobility industry is a plus.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus.
