Position Information 

TxDOT's Atlanta District is looking for a Roadway Maintenance Tech (General Transportation Tech) I, II or III. This position performs routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations and training other employees.

Position Description

Roadway Maintenance Tech I: Performs routine (Learning) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Roadway Maintenance Tech II: Performs moderately complex (Intermediate) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspections roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Roadway Maintenance Tech III: Performs highly complex (Advanced) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as construction, contract maintenance, and material process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Roadway maintenance Tech I, II, or III:

  • Learns to operate light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Assists in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment, tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Roadway Accidents/Inclement Weather/Natural Disasters-Must be able to respond 24/7 when notified. Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech II include:

  • Inspects construction and routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a Roadway Maintenance Tech III include:

  • Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Roadway Maintenance Tech I: No previous experience required.

Roadway Maintenance Tech II: 1 year in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.*

Roadway Maintenance Tech Ill: 2 years in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.*

  • Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • The use of light and heavy highway equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; received information by oral communication.
