Enterprise Collaboration Platforms – DevOps Engineer

JOB PURPOSE: 

Enterprise Technologies is one of Stanford's central IT organizations, providing computing and communication infrastructure and support for the teaching, learning and business activities of the University. 

The DevOps Engineer is a member of the Authentication and Collaboration team in Enterprise Technologies. The team is seeking a highly motivated individual who will play a critical role to define and drive our platform initiatives. This role will help implement IAC across our existing and new Google/AWS/Azure infrastructure, provide technical guidance across engineering teams, mentor junior engineers, and be a thought leader on the team. You will also help implement systems, tools, and processes across the entire organization that will greatly improve engineering's efficiency and application reliability. 

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.

The expected pay range for this position is $118,000 – 156,365 per annum.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The DevOps Engineer will work closely as part of the team to lead, develop, plan, support and secure Stanford's infrastructure. He or she will play a critical role in optimizing software delivery pipelines, fostering collaboration, and maintaining reliable and efficient infrastructure. The role requires a deep understanding of development, operations, automation, and cloud technologies, as well as strong leadership and communication skills. Additional responsibilities include:

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain services using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Design, develop, and maintain automated deployment pipelines, including continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) processes.
  • Select and implement appropriate DevOps tools and technologies to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
  • Write scripts and code to automate provisioning, configuration management, and deployment tasks.
  • Manage infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools like Terraform or Ansible to provision and manage cloud resources and on-premises infrastructure.
  • Ensure scalability, reliability, and security of infrastructure components to support application requirements.
  • Define and implement release strategies to ensure consistent and controlled software deployments.
  • Plan and execute software releases, coordinating activities across different teams to minimize downtime and risks.
  • Set up monitoring and alerting systems to track application and infrastructure health.
  • Analyze performance metrics and logs to identify bottlenecks, optimize resource usage, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Implement security best practices throughout the software delivery lifecycle to ensure data protection and compliance with industry regulations.
  • Perform vulnerability assessments and apply necessary security patches and updates.
  • Regularly assess existing processes and tools, identifying areas for improvement and optimization.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the DevOps workflow.
  • Lead incident response efforts by diagnosing and resolving critical issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with teams to conduct post-incident reviews and implement preventive measures.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of infrastructure configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Ensure knowledge sharing within the team and across the organization.
  • Communicate project status, challenges, and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance to development teams regarding deployment best practices.
  • Collaborating with other members of University IT, to ensure that our services meet operations requirements for both internal and external clients, and ensuring that standards for consistent documentation are met. 
  • Participating in 24x7 on-call support rotation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 5 to 8 years of relevant professional experience in roles related to DevOps, software engineering, systems administration, or infrastructure management.
  • Should have a deep understanding of DevOps principles, practices, and methodologies.
  • Should have a track record of successfully implementing DevOps processes, automation, and tools in real-world projects.
  • Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or others is a requirement
  • Proficiency in container technologies like Docker and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes
  • Proficient in languages like Python, Bash, or PowerShell to automate various processes and tasks.
  • Extensive experience with setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, CircleCI, or others is crucial
  • Expertise in defining and managing infrastructure using IaC tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
  • Solid understanding of security best practices, including securing containers, networks, and cloud resources.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, resolve incidents, and develop strategies to prevent future occurrences.
  • Experience in leading DevOps initiatives, mentoring junior team members, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for a Senior DevOps engineer to effectively collaborate with developers, operations, and management teams.
  • Should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and industry trends.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Ability to automate common administration and management tasks through Windows PowerShell.
  • Experience with Intune device management, device compliance, and access controls. 
  • Comfort with public speaking is a plus. He or she should be able to give a detailed technical presentation.
