DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Office of the Chief Investment Officer ("UC Investments") is responsible for managing the University of California's retirement, endowment, working capital, and cash assets under the policies, guidelines, and performance benchmarks established by the Regents. The mission of the Office is to implement those policies and guidelines by selecting, executing, and monitoring investment strategies designed to add value over the benchmarks within a risk-controlled framework. The Office adheres to high ethical as well as professional standards in serving the investment management needs of its constituency. The Chief Investment Officer has full investment discretion, while the Regents retain responsibility for Asset Allocation and Investment Guidelines.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Investment Data Analyst plays an important role in planning for, developing and executing performance and investment data related initiatives. He/she will provide data support for the various investment teams and downstream applications within UC Investments. The Senior Analyst is primarily responsible for maintaining the Investment Book of Record by ensuring accuracy and granularity investment performance, exposures and transactions data for all assets under management. The hire will analyze and resolve any data issues, while ensuring that internal and external partners are updated while abiding by principles of data management as defined by management team. The Senior Analyst will work closely with the investment, operations, compliance and risk teams to develop new reports, processes and analytics to support the investment decision making process at all levels as well as assist in implementation and integrations.

The Senior Analyst will work with large sets of investment data and bespoke data sets across various disciplines, including Performance & Attribution, Risk, Accounting, Compliance and Asset Allocation. The individual in this role will be the main point of contact to:

  • Address data related issues including maintenance of custom data and mapping tables; Configure reports and reporting scripts.
  • Identify and resolve data gaps.
  • Provide oversight to daily and monthly data feeds to and from downstream systems.

The hire will support the office by:

  • Developing a thorough understanding of our governing body, stakeholders, portfolio structures, benchmarks and systems; Identifying and applying ways to challenge/improve current processes to increase efficiency and data accuracy throughout the UC Investments. 
  • Communicating and collaborating with the various teams. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

50% - Data Management / Automation

  • Ensure the accuracy of underlying data in data warehouse (historical exposures, asset mix, performance, policy weights and more) used for investment decision making purposes. 
  • Prepare, interpret, and investigate anomalies with appropriate individuals/groups to resolve errors. 
  • Build data integrity reports to cross-check data across multiple views and sources. 
  • Ensure daily and monthly scheduled tasks are completed without errors. 
  • Develop methodologies to capture and/or enrich data tables/elements to increase ability to automate reports. 
  • Provide guidance on data flow/capture/display processes to support the review and approval process. 
  • Build new investment structures/assets from a data management capacity. 
  • Augment and/or write custom functions fit for purpose to answer time sensitive and mission critical questions regarding the portfolios. 

25% - Investment Reporting

  • Produce high quality, accurate and timely investment reports for the Investment team, the Regents and clients of UC Investments. 
  • Report on asset mix with a particular focus on investment performance, future cash flows and notional exposures. 
  • Prepare scheduled investment reports to various committees and foundations. 
  • Partner with Senior Management and Investment Teams to produce and incorporate new content (charts, tables, graphs, infographics) to investment reports. 
  • Manage list, format and timeline of internal and external reports for stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with Investment, Operation and Data Management teams to develop scalable and impactful analytics to enhance messaging and storytelling of investment reports. 
  • Develop a reporting production line that includes elements of review, compliance adherence and approval processes. 
  • Develop, maintain, improve and automate reports.

15% - Project Management 

  • Lead and represent the interests of the reporting function in new tools and systems implementations. In so doing, develop a strong project management culture to:
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for execution of projects. 
  • Assist in the definition of project scope and objectives for reporting.
  • Manage the development of detailed project plans to monitor and track progress. 

10% - Ad hoc Requests 

  • Follow up on ad hoc and custom data requests across departments, including queries, reports, custom calculations. Assess new tools to improve quality of reports. 
  • Support continuous improvement projects across departments. 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6 years of related experience with investment performance reporting, interpretation of performance data, attribution and risk.
  • Deep understanding of portfolios, asset classes, risk factors and data structures. 
  • Demonstrated success in vendor management.
  • Knowledge of investment software programs such as MSCI Barra One, Custodian and Banking Systems, Investment Manager databases, Bloomberg, Solovis.
  • Working knowledge of data visualization tools/methods.
  • Ability to project manage and handle multiple tasks at once.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to interact with others in a consistently positive manner, exercise discretion and tact to gain consensus in an environment where others may have strongly conflicting ideas and goals. 
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly research and collect pertinent information, identify critical points and integrate them to define and test options and alternatives. Insightful and creative skill in reasoning and logic and quantitative analysis demonstrated by ability to develop recommendations and justification for the most productive course of action. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including the demonstrated ability to articulate ideas and issues clearly, concisely and persuasively to a variety of audiences and prepare and/or edit complex reports involving logical and quantitative analysis, so that it is clearly understandable by both technical and lay readers. and effectively advances and justifies a specific proposal or set of recommendations.
  • Ability to generate both qualitative and quantitative independent analysis. 
  • Ability to plan and manage projects in their entirety and ensure they are delivered on time. 
  • Demonstrated good judgement when asking questions both internally and externally to seek desired information or understanding. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of UC policy, guidelines, asset allocation, portfolio structure, investment strategies, managers and holdings. 
  • Knowledge of UC data structures. 
  • Experience with Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS)

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and a minimum of six (6) years of job-related experience and/or equivalent experience/training. 
  • Preferred: Master's degree, CIPM, other designations or equivalent experience/training. 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite in Oakland, CA at least three days per week. The hire will be a current resident of California or be willing to relocate to California.

Payscale: $140,000 – $155,000 commensurate with experience.

Full Salary Range: 105,500 – 200,700

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position and the pay scale is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
