About the Role:

The A.V. Club is looking for an Editor-in-Chief who can help grow the brand into a must-read for pop culture fans who never miss the latest when it comes to Hollywood and its biggest stars and projects. Whether it’s the newest season of The Bachelor or a Marvel casting update, an analysis of the Taylor Swift empire, or a fan theory sweeping TikTok—AV Club is all over it. The EIC role requires an entrepreneurial and seasoned digital editor with a POV about audiences and what works (and what doesn’t). You’ll have an ear to the ground on the latest news and trends in entertainment and are comfortable leading a diverse group of writers, reporters, editors of varying experience levels (based largely in NYC and Los Angeles), in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. You have a freelance network you can tap to support our reporting when needed. 

The EIC is accountable for traffic and growth. You’re comfortable with audience development best practices and analytics tools and collaborating with various G/O Media stakeholders offering insight to help support your goals. Not only can you edit quickly, but you can pinch-hit and write when needed and/or necessary. The EIC should have endless fresh ideas to help us capture new audiences and raise our profile and will serve as an ambassador and evangelist for the brand in Hollywood and beyond. 

This is an on-site, in-office role based in Los Angeles, reporting to the Deputy Editorial Director. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Spearhead editorial strategy to help support traffic goals. 
  • Manage an editorial team based largely in NYC and Los Angeles. 
  • Responsible for quarterly traffic goals.
  • Act as liaison for the edit team with G/O Media’s sales and product teams.
  • Greenlight video franchises (working in conjunction with partners on a centralized video team servicing the whole portfolio). 
  • Manage budget, logistics, and resource allocation for the brand.
  • Use data insights and analytics to inform the way we curate and edit stories.
  • Manage personnel, staffing, and hiring across the AV Club newsroom, with support from our HR team. 
  • Organize and maintain weekly, monthly, and annual editorial calendars and ensure deadlines and goals are being met. 

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of editorial experience in digital media, including at least 5 years as an editor
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, Chartbeat and a digital media CMS
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative problem-solving skills
  • Experience managing an edit calendar
  • Ability to juggle a vibrant daily newsroom’s many needs with long-term projects 

The salary range for this position is $150,000.00 to $200,000.00, dependent on years of related experience.
