The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of The Metropolitan Opera's Human Resource (HR) department, ensuring compliance with legal and labor requirements and implementation of the organization's mission and talent strategy.

Specifically, the CHRO will spearhead organizational initiatives spanning organizational design, professional development, performance management, talent acquisition, employee relations, mediation, and culture-building. In addition, the CHRO will drive operational HR best practices and high-impact HR projects in a range of areas including compensation and benefits and HR administration, and will oversee the execution of The Metropolitan Opera's various collective bargaining agreements, in partnership with General Counsel.

Reporting to the Deputy General Manager, the CHRO will manage, coach, and mentor a team of eight HR professionals. They will bring strategic talent skills, expertise in core human resource functions, and a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced human capital leader to develop strategy and implement best practices designed to enhance the overall employee experience at The Metropolitan Opera.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Department Leadership

  • Spearhead high-impact HR projects to elevate and streamline the department's operations
  • Recruit, develop, manage, and mentor HR team members to support high performance and career growth
  • Facilitate professional development, training, and certification activities for HR staff
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations and coaching for HR team members
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets; review and negotiate HR-related contracts and agreements

Organizational Development

  • Serve as the organization's subject matter expert and coordinator in matters pertaining to recruitment, orientation, employee relations matters, policy development, mediation, compliance, leadership development, and organizational learning
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with stakeholders across the organization through high rates of responsiveness and a customer service orientation; help to steward the organization successfully through new changes or initiatives by leveraging the strength of those relationships and reputation
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, trainings, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource strategy and compliance needs
  • Oversee the implementation and improvement of all human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development
  • Conduct research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics as well as employee experience and feedback

Talent Acquisition and Management

  • Develop a creative and innovative vision for talent acquisition at The Metropolitan Opera and establish best-in-class recruitment practices to meet current staffing needs and build a pipeline for future roles
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention; develop and execute best practices for hiring and talent management
  • Develop strategy for building diverse slates of candidates (internal and external) from varied backgrounds and establish and implement processes for external hiring, internal role changes, and promotions
  • Evaluate and enhance the full cycle recruiting process to streamline efficiencies and avoid delays or gaps in the process and timelines
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to hiring managers to ensure The Metropolitan Opera recruits and hires exceptional and diverse talent

Employee Relations and HR Administration

  • Drive employee engagement and retention efforts, collaborating with leaders to develop effective internal communications strategies, processes, tools, and training to elevate leadership skills, promote morale, and achieve annual goals
  • Implement talent management processes including surveys, performance reviews, and compensation reviews, and utilize data, in partnership with managers, to strengthen performance management and culture
  • Develop and maintain a strong rapport and highly responsive communication with all levels of staff, including union representatives and program/department heads
  • Ensure benefits and other aspects of human resources infrastructure operate with both exceptional accuracy and a strong customer service orientation
  • Continuously review and leverage resources (staff, budget, technology) to ensure appropriate best practices in HR administration and procedures so that they are efficient, equitable, timely, auditable, and responsive
  • Coordinate and collaborate with the General Counsel with respect to the execution of collective bargaining agreements
  • Monitor and ensure the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; apply this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR or SPHR preferred
  • At least ten years of human resource management experience across a range of HR competencies is required
  • At least 5-7 years of experience working in a unionized environment is required
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills, including previous experience managing people, with a track record of leading others to achieve ambitious goals
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of HR compliance, benefits administration, records retention, employee and union relations, DEI, and HR policies and procedures
  • Excellent relationship building skills with a demonstrated ability to work well with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High degrees of conscientiousness, responsiveness, and a strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, including proven abilities to influence, manage, and motivate, as well as maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Proven ability to achieve goals and align interests through cooperation and collaboration with other groups and cross-functional teams, even where no direct reporting relationship exists
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and operate as a self-starter in a fast-paced, complex environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze and problem solve situations of both technical and personal natures
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization's HRIS and talent management systems

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times

Location:

  • The CHRO will be expected to work on-site at Lincoln Center in Manhattan at least 4 days per week, ideally 5.
