Sr. Director, External Communications

The impact you will make:

Agios Pharmaceuticals is searching for a dynamic Sr. Director, External Communications to join our growing team. We want someone who cares about this important work, and who’s driven to connect to our mission of helping these patient communities. The Sr. Director, External Communications will report to the Chief Financial Officer, and will be responsible for leading the strategy and execution of all external communications. This individual will create, plan, and execute public relations programs to effectively deliver corporate, scientific, and product messages to key audiences in order to achieve Agios’ goals.

What you will do:

  • Partner closely with the Leadership Team to deliver one consistent and aligned voice to all key stakeholders that reflects Agios’ strategy, values, and priorities
  • Lead all PR core materials
  • Develop high-quality communications materials aligned with company goals and messages
  • Collaborate with internal communications team to ensure Agios employees are informed on key company news
  • Design and execute a comprehensive digital and social media strategy to disseminate the corporate narrative across channels and complement the company’s external presence; maintain the company’s existing channels and manage a digital firm to maintain company website
  • Support Agios’ presence at medical conferences, investor days and other external events 
  • Manage PR agency relationships
  • Actively collaborate with teams to manage a proactive, well planned external media strategy, including preparation and execution of corporate and business announcements, media opportunities in line with external events and/or earnings activities, and opportunistic media relations, with support from a PR agency
  • ESG / Annual Report creation and production 
  • Manage vendors (developers, designers, etc.) for supporting the distribution of news and other corporate visibility platforms
  • Assist in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content
  • Build relationships both internally and externally that enable accurate, efficient and optimal creation and delivery of key messages
  • Facilitate and ensure compliance to the corporate disclosure process, in collaboration with IR
  • Lead corporate and product communication programs
  • Effectively communicate Agios progress to key external audiences from a corporate perspective as well as in support of our approved and late-stage medicines (e.g., supporting disease education efforts, communicating the value of our medicines to patients, conveying the potential of our pipeline & managing issues) 

What you bring:

  • 10+ years’ of relevant work experience in public relations, with a demonstrated understanding of rare diseases (pharmaceutical or biotech company experience is required)
  • Ability to work independently and effectively design and execute on a purposeful strategy for communications, convene and drive alignment across diverse cross-functional teams, and manage key deliverables to conclusion on time and on budget
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, cross-functional, and mission-driven environment
  • Ability to develop and manage strategic plans
  • Ability to manage the communication of sensitive and confidential information
  • Knowledge of SEC, FDA, and other regulatory agencies’ requirements and disclosure guidelines
  • Aptitude for understanding and communicating scientific information and clinical data
  • Proven ability to maintain and grow relationships with reporters
  • Excellent skills in collaboration
  • Self-starter; track record of driving for results 

Work Location:

Location Specific – Hybrid: This role requires some work onsite at our Cambridge Headquarters as needed. Hybrid schedules vary but are generally less than 3 days per week onsite. Regular conversations with manager are encouraged to ensure alignment on in-person presence/expectations. Employees in this role are expected to live within a commutable distance to the office and some travel may be required commensurate to the above job description and/or to attend team meetings and other company events.
