Job Description

Dewberry has an opportunity for an experienced project manager to serve as the Transportation Design Department Manager in the Richmond, VA & Fairfax, VA office, with flexible work hours and the ability for part-time telework. This individual will report to the mid-Atlantic transportation Business Unit Manager, lead a growing transportation design team in Richmond, and coordinate with transportation leadership staff in Virginia and Maryland. Collectively, this business unit provides professional services to numerous public agencies, private entities, and contracting partners. The selected person will be responsible for oversight of staff in Richmond, Virginia performing roadway and infrastructure design, calculations, preparation of contract documents, and engineering support during construction. They will also be responsible for conducting business development activities to grow the department, win projects of increasing scale, act as a Project Manager or Design Manager for large or complex projects, and act as a client manager for one or more public agencies. Typical projects involve private, locality, and state agency clients in the transportation market. The selected candidate will be heavily involved in staff professional development, growth, retention and recruiting, mentoring, training, quality management, project management practices, and contribute to sales and revenue generation of the business unit.

Responsibilities

  • Market Dewberry’s capabilities to external clients to win additional and new work with localities surrounding the Richmond area.
  • Supervise and provide direction, guidance, and inspiration to transportation design staff in Richmond.
  • Successfully perform as Project Manager (design-bid-build) or Design Manager (design-build) of large, complex jobs.
  • Recruit, retain, develop, mentor, train and grow individual practitioners and teams.
  • Staff project teams with the right number and type of skill sets to contribute to successful delivery.
  • Collaborate pro-actively and productively with other department managers within the Business Unit
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other business units and offices across the mid-Atlantic region.
  • Conduct business development activities, proposal writing, and oversight.
  • Responsible for operations that lead to meeting revenue and profit goals.
  • Actively contribute to the quality management program.

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • BS in Engineering with 10+ years of highway engineering and project management experience.
  • Project management success for mid- and large-scale projects for VDOT is required. Experience with localities surrounding the Richmond, Virginia area is desired (Henrico County, Chesterfield County, Hanover County, etc.).
  • Experience as a Design-Manager on design-build project(s) is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer in Virginia is required.
  • Connections with VDOT and Richmond, Virginia areas are preferred.
  • Experience writing successful proposals and leading client presentations is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and effective leadership skills.
  • Understanding of transportation design software is required.
  • Local travel and a clean driving record are required.
