Position Summary

Increases awareness and prestige of UH clinical and research expertise, and protects and enhances the organization's reputation on local, regional, national and trade levels. Proactively pitches patient success and other story ideas to enhance the reputation of UH. Works directly with UH leaders, clinical experts and researchers on story development. Orchestrates live interview opportunities, print and digital media pitches, as well as contributes to internal UH communications. The Senior Media Relations Strategist is also part of a team responsible for managing the UH Newsroom, which is an online resource for reporters. Reactively responds to media inquiries from local, regional, national and trade media, who count on the UH media relations team for rapid turn-around on stories that include expert commentary on a full range of clinical, research and healthcare business matters.

Essential Functions

  • Identify and develop relationships with local, regional, national and trade news reporters and producers.
  • Day-to-day media relations support and assisting the team with inserting experts into trending news stories, this position will own key service line areas, and lead proactive media and community engagement strategies for:
  • UH Community Hospitals
  • West Market: UH Elyria, Parma and St. John medical centers
  • East Market: UH Ahuja, Beachwood, Conneaut, Geauga, Geneva, Lake West and TriPoint Medical Centers
  • South Market: UH Portage and Samaritan Medical Centers
  • ▪ Includes meeting with community outreach teams and assisting leadership with crisis communications
  • Behavioral Health (population health, mental health, addiction medicine)
  • Primary Care (includes patient entry points such as emergency departments and urgent cares)
  • There is also a potential to "own" other service lines/additional areas of interest that are not yet assigned, as the Senior Media Relations Strategist grows in their role. 
  • Pitch and/or produce stories across earned and owned channels (print, broadcast, digital, social media and internal).
  • Track, analyze, and report out on media coverage; experience in media monitoring programs, such as Cision, is a plus.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on strategic recommendations about using earned and social media to advance their goals.
  • Lead public relations special projects as assigned.
  • Write and produce pitches, articles, news releases, social media and digital workplace posts (UH's internal website).
  • Take photographs/videos with phone to enhance stories, or work with multimedia team to capture relevant images and b-roll.
  • Develop and/or produce broadcast/video assets and interviews.

Additional Responsibilities

  • This position also requires availability to be on-call for the team on nights and weekends, and answer pages from reporters who need assistance fulfilling interview requests. • The on-call schedule requirement is for one week every six weeks, and rotates throughout the media team.
  • Apply knowledge of healthcare issues and UH business goals, services, clinical expertise and research to develop stories for earned and owned channels.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism, public-relations, communications, marketing or related field required

Work Experience

  • 5+ years of experience with a media outlet or through a communications/public relations position with proven experience in proactive placement of media required 
  • 8+ years in producing, shooting, and editing for broadcast media preferred 
  • Extensive experience in writing for various formats: pitches, news releases, broadcast, digital, social media, and internal preferred

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of broadcast and print news media required
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills required
  • Strong leadership management and relationship skills required
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with good problem-solving ability required
  • Demonstrated ability to use PCs, Microsoft Office suite (Outlook), Internet, general office equipment (i.e., printers, copy machine, etc.), arrange Zoom meetings, and manage own calendar and schedule required
  • Knowledge of broadcast studio operations and expertise in news room activities preferred
  • Video editing skills to complement an evolution to more video content produced for media and internal consumption by our UH news studio. preferred
  • Content management and scheduling software for newsroom, social media and internal communications preferred
