INTRODUCTION

The Pratt & Whitney Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering (PW-IASE) at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor-in-Residence. The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the Institute’s teaching program but is encouraged to pursue their research interests and collaborate within the Department. Interested candidates will also be offered the position of Associate Director of Academic Programs of the PW-IASE.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Education

  • Teach 2 courses per semester for the PW-IASE (courses will be decided with the PW-IASE Director).
  • Actively advertise the PW-IASE curriculum (initiate discussions with Industry for enrollment in one of our Certificates and M.Eng. programs).
  • Actively advertise the curriculum of PW-IASE to INCOSE and other communication media in the field of Systems Engineering.
  • Benchmark the curriculum of PW-IASE against other competing programs. Identify the differentiating elements of the curriculum of the PW-IASE and propose future directions for the Institute to remain current and cutting-edge.
  • Be responsible for the organization, scheduling, and realization of PW-IASE courses. Coordinate with instructors, collect student evaluations, and report to the Director and PW-IASE Academic Industry Advisory Board the performance of courses.
  • Hold quarterly meetings with instructors of curriculum tracks and make sure there is continuity between courses within a track.
  • Pursue and lead proposals for academic projects from Federal Funding Agencies.
  • Organize and coordinate Capstone Design projects (communicate with Academic and Industry Advisors and have a feasible list of assignments).
  • Assist in improving the media and methods of online dissemination of the PW-IASE curriculum.

Research

  • Participate actively in research proposals of the PW-IASE.
  • Develop a research program in the field of Systems Engineering education (own or collaborative with PW-IASE members).
  • Lead education proposals with tasks of integration of research with education.
  • Facilitate monthly meetings with the members of PW-IASE for research project updates and discussions on future directions.

Outreach and Industry Engagement

  • Run a campaign to advertise the PW-IASE in the state and globally (research, education, and outreach activities).
  • Coordinate the activities of the PW-IASE Academic Industry Advisory Board.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned Ph.D. in Systems Engineering or related field by the time of appointment.
  • Have a proven record of excellence in teaching systems engineering courses and industry exposure and collaboration. 
  • Candidates must have a deep commitment to promoting diversity through their academic and research programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in several areas of systems engineering.
  • Prior engagement with INCOSE and outstanding record of teaching and scholarship commitment to effective teaching and use of innovative techniques.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with students in both large and small audiences.
  • The ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, annually renewable, non-tenure track position with the possibility of subsequent annual academic-year reappointment, contingent on positive reviews and program funding, and may lead to a multi-year appointment. The start date is as soon as possible. Interested candidates will also be offered the position of Associate Director of Academic Programs of the PW-IASE. Employment is conditional upon the timely completion of an approved I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form).
