Summary

The City of Charleston is looking for a Peer Support Specialist to join the Police Department. Peer Support Specialists are individuals who have been successful in their own substance use recovery, and work to help others in their recovery processes.

Examples of Duties

  • Initiate participant assessments of strengths, challenges, resources, and goals (i.e., recovery capital) across multiple life domains
  • Develop recovery plans to support clients as they transition to the community, based on the wants, needs, and interest of the participants
  • Identify mechanisms to increase the engagement and support to family members
  • Contribute effectively as a team member, participating in weekly team meetings, sharing ideas, and communicating with supervisors and other team members.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by agency policies and procedures
  • Maintain client charts according to quality standards regarding outreach content and timely entry to the Overdose Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) or a Critical Incident Management System (CIMS) as established by CPD policy/procedures.
  • Use recovery oriented practices such motivational interviewing
  • Provide recovery check-ups or other forms of continuing support at least 3 months after transition out of treatment services.
  • Refer clients for screening into Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services
  • Provide information on MAT medications and their potential benefits
  • Working knowledge of and responsibility for service provider partnerships in the area.
  • Compliance with all Charleston Center/ Charleston County and City of Charleston Policies and Procedures
  • Works primarily Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and after hours/ flexible coverage on a rotating basis. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Addiction Crisis Task Force Project Coordinator. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Two or more years of recovery from a substance use disorder and willingness to self-identify as a person in recovery. 
  • Ability to complete SC DAODAS Peer Support Specialist training and maintain certification for the duration of employment
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license and 10 year driving record. 
  • Computer proficiency, including recording information in data systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Related professional experience
