The Global Fabric leader works across Gap Inc Brands and the Global Supply Chain to drive best practice in Fabric Innovation and Development. The role will lead the integration of an end to end best practice fabric development process with the brands and categories.   Leading a community of practice across GIS and Fabric R&D across categories, the role will ensure our fabric strategy supports innovation and cost savings for Gap Inc. while ensuring that performance quality is achieved.   The role will be accountable and responsible for strategic fabric development and R&D across Gap International Sourcing’s categories and capitalizing on the fabric platforming opportunities. This key global leadership role will liaise at various intersections across the organization to cultivate innovation, quality and end to end partnership on Fabric.

Principle responsibilities:

Fabric/Mill Management
  • Be a leader in driving the global Fabric Practice that incorporates the Fabric team, R&D and fabric tech & quality support.
  • Drive consistent and best in class Fabric Development process across Brands, as well as Gap International Sourcing categories.
  • Ensure all categories have well documented fabric and mill strategies aligned to Product 3.0 goals. Work across categories to provide guidance on overall strategy for preferred mill relationships, negotiation and recommendations on commitments, pricing and hedging of commodities through supplier positions; help the GIS teams to develop strategies that enable us to leverage scale across categories.
  • Develop an integrated fabric development process with the brands and necessary tools. This includes development of a digital and physical fabric library across Gap International Sourcing that is integrated with the fabric library in brand.
  • Work with mill and vendor management teams, strategy leads and brands to ensure that we are meeting platform fabrics goals and provide guidance on how we can utilizes strategic fabric to maximum benefit.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to ensure we are developing effective relationships with mills and preferred vertical vendors; help enhance the quality of our fabric supplier relationships towards strategic partnerships, develop mill negotiation strategy which includes building appropriate fabric supplier base including direct mill and, in collaboration with vendor management, vertical vendors.
  • Partner across the organization to develop and execute on a talent strategy that will provide best in class fabric development talent.
  • Work across technical and vendor management teams to develop the Mill Event Process
  • Work to enable increased connection between Fabric R+D, Merchant and design and integrated development process.  

Fabric/Yarn Development & Innovation
  • Develop innovation, R&D capability in fabric/ yarn development
  • Work with category technical teams to develop innovative fabric/yarn/finishing solutions. Ensure that across category, we are conducting seasonless, continual research and development.
  • Continually lead efforts in fabric/yarn development including  the development/maintenance of the fabric library

Category functional teams, Quality, Brand Tech/R&D, Designers, Mills, Vendors


Knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Minimum 15 years of professional experience in fabric sourcing, R&D and development
  • Exposure of handling global mills – India / China / EU etc.
  • Strong fabric development and R&D expertise across categories
  • Ability to manage, motivate and develop others
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross functional leaders and peers to achieve business results
  • Strong stakeholder management and brand communication
  • Ability to effectively manage and plan resources to achieve goals and support ad-hoc initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to deal head-on with issues and challenging situations
  • Ability to plan and successfully lead complex negotiations
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and written skills
  • Willing to travel as required

  • bachelor degree in textile or equivalent;
  • Additional Degree /Diploma in Management, merchandising, business administration, supply chain management, or related discipline preferred
