Description Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to apply your legal expertise to be a strategic thought partner for managing and protecting our U.S. Employment practices and serving as a trusted business partner to our U.S. HR teams. The ideal candidate will have a strong U.S. Employment legal background with experience supporting in a manufacturing industry. In this pivotal role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with the business to assist the company in daily advice and counsel on U.S. employment matters.

The candidate selected to fill this role will work in person at our North American Headquarters in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Scope of the Role

  • Providing legal guidance to stakeholders at various levels of the organization on general U.S. state and federal employment law, including Title VII, ADEA, FLSA, WARN Act, ADA, FMLA on topics such as leave management, wage and hour issues, the hiring process, internal investigations, employee separations, performance management, handbooks and policies, reductions in force, data protection, and employee privacy.
  • Being the legal/business partner for U.S. HRBPs and generalists and working cross functionally with the U.S. payroll, benefits and Talent Acquisition teams.
  • Responsible for assigning, managing, and/or conducting investigations of HR-related issues and potential compliance legal issues as well as ensuring investigations are handled promptly, accurately, and resolved consistently in the U.S.
  • Responsible for conducting legal research for HR and internal business customers and providing concise, understandable, practical, accurate, and actionable legal advice to non-attorneys on a wide variety of legal matters related to U.S. employment law, internal investigations, and HR policies and practices.
  • Training HR and business leaders on various state and federal employment laws, best practices including documentation, discipline, and leave management.
  • Resolving legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise, including pre-litigation dispute resolution and settlements, responding to federal and state agency charges and complaints, and managing employment litigation with the use of outside counsel.
  • Helping select and/or direct the work of outside counsel, defining project objectives, managing legal projects, and monitoring outside counsel to ensure total spend is within budget.

Experience Required

  • Juris Doctor degree from accredited law school and admission to a state bar; active and in good standing.
  • Typically 5 years of combined legal and business experience in a corporate or law firm environment. 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to provide pragmatic and solution-oriented advice.
  • Experience conducting internal U.S. employment and compliance investigations.
  • Experience providing advice and counsel regarding U.S. employment laws and regulations, including ADA, FMLA, Title VII, wage and hour laws, WARN Act, as well as similar state laws and regulations. 
  • Clear understanding of and adherence to ethical principles, company values, code of conduct, and company policies.
  • Commercially minded with excellent communication and inter-personal skills to enable working with all levels of management and negotiate with external clients.
  • Hands-on, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a high-volume workload efficiently and smoothly.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a team-orientated attitude.
  • Able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
