About the Role: We are looking for a Battery Cell Component Innovation Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will partner with cross-functional teams searching for significant new battery business opportunities where unsolved problems could be addressed by Gore’s capabilities.

This role will be located in Gore Facility in Shenzhen, China or Shanghai, China.

Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct customer interviews and in-depth market research to understand customer needs, preferences, and industry trends related to battery cell components for electric vehicles
  • Partner with MFT (Market Face Team) associates and collaborate with customers to gather feedback, identify pain points, and understand their specific requirements and performance expectations
  • Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to identify and evaluate new technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes that can enhance battery cell component performance
  • Test and validate technical concepts for potential value propositions and business models
  • Conduct and translate theoretical analysis and simulation to optimize cell/pack design concepts
  • Lead the ideation, development, and prototyping of innovative battery cell component designs; drive complex new product development projects, ensuring effective execution and communication within Gore’s project practices and Automotive industrial standards; act as a global subject matter expert on battery cells, providing insights and recommendations to internal teams and customers
  • Define and conduct fundamental experiments including performance in simulated environments, life cycle testing, and capacity degradation
  • Seek to develop new IP that protects technology intended to be used commercially
  • Work with external labs to define and conduct testing and validation of battery cell components; understand customer’s production process which may impact or limit how Gore’s solutions may be implemented and valued
  • Provide technical guidance and support to cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and supply chain, throughout the product development lifecycle; partner with Product Specialists/Application Engineers to create integrated product designs that balance fitness for Automotive Tier 1 customer needs and manufacturing costs

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, or a related field (PhD preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in battery cell development
  • Track record as a scientist who can connect fundamental concepts with practical business or customer requirements. Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery chemistries, cell manufacturing processes, and battery management
  • systems
  • Proficiency in battery modeling and simulation tools. Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations, such as UN 38.3, IEC 62133, and ISO 12405
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including Mandarin & English, proficiency in technical discussions
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a track record of driving innovation in battery technology. Demonstrated ability to learn new technology spaces quickly and support multiple projects as needed
  • Ability to effectively collaborate cross-functionally and with global project teams
  • Start-up mind set; action oriented, comfortable with ambiguity. Ability to be hands-on and work through others as needed. Objective and data-driven in technical assessments
  • Ability to travel up to 30%

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Industry experience at a Li-Ion battery manufacturer and/or system integrator
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in battery cell development, preferably within the electric vehicle industry
  • Experience with Lean Startup business development
  • Electro-chemistry or thermal management of batteries in the Automotive Industry
