POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Director of the Hunter College Art Galleries , the Gallery Curator will manage exhibitions and programs and administer the day-to-day facilities operations of two galleries (The Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Gallery at Hunter's main campus and the 205 Hudson Gallery in the MFA facility in Tribeca), and help oversee the exhibitions and programs at Hunter East Harlem Gallery at the Silberman School of Social Work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising all exhibitions presented by the Hunter College Art Galleries (HCAG).
  • Hiring and supervising part time staff.
  • Assisting the Director with developing and monitoring annual budgets for the HCAG.
  • Supervising and providing direction for exhibitions organized by guest curators.
  • Fielding initial proposals and working with artists and scholars to develop future projects.
  • Recruiting faculty and alumni of the MFA and MA programs to propose exhibitions and working with them to modify exhibition ideas.
  • Setting exhibition schedule with staff.
  • Curating exhibitions and producing a catalogue in connection with the exhibition.
  • Editing most catalogue material, exhibition didactics and press releases drafted by guest curators.
  • Supervising invitation and catalogue design and production.
  • Hiring and instructing graphic designers for all printed materials.
  • Editing grant applications for financial support of exhibitions.
  • Working with guest curators on targeted mailings to press and critics.
  • Coordinating with faculty and graduating BFA and MFA students in connection with the semiannual thesis exhibitions.
  • Providing input for guest curators and the Department of Art in the organization of public programs, lectures, and symposia in conjunction with exhibitions.
  • In conjunction with the Gallery Director, supervising Hunter College collection including reviewing potential donations, as well as rotating and maintaining collection on view throughout the college and conducting periodic evaluations of collection.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS-The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in Art History , Museum Studies, Studio Art or related field and previous curatorial and/or administrative experience in a college or university gallery or museum.

Salary commensurate with education and experience($62,411 - $82,928).
