About the Job 

We are shipping more robots and are taking on larger contracts. We are delivering integrated solutions, including operations, maintenance and support services through a Managed Service approach. You will work closely with Project Managers,Technical Support Specialists and other SE colleagues to deliver successful projects to our customers. As an SE, you will design and integrate fleets of OTTO autonomous mobile robots (AMR), design custom attachments, lead testing and design software for our customer facilities. In addition, you will deliver training to integration partners and end-users, and evaluate use cases to establish guidelines, standards, and best practices for how OTTO Motors products can be used by the market. Furthermore, as part of the SE team, you will help to contribute to defining our product requirements and influence our product roadmap. With this role being part of the Managed Services vertical, you will also help to support ongoing operations at our customers through Tier3 support and performance improvement activities of our solutions.

As a Senior Systems Designer, you have strong technical knowledge and experience (preferably Mechanical, Electrical and Software of automation solutions), you know how to ensure (with others) things get done and have exceptional coordination skills. Your expertise stems from years of experience in designing and integrating complex systems solutions for industrial automation applications. You possess the ability to represent intricate systems through simplified communications, effectively conveying objectives and details to end users. You also know how to challenge and lead subcontractors/vendors to make sure they deliver a quality solution that meets customer requirements. You know how to adapt to changing directions, priorities, and be a world-class juggler… with various project scope aspects and activities that is. You have the experience and ability to ensure our solutions, once delivered, are operating and being maintained in a way that ensures technical performance of customer mission critical automated processes. 

Primary responsibilities

  • Lead design, deployment and successful completion of complex projects 
  • Support definition of middle layer software design to interface between OTTO Fleet Manager API and any third party automation systems in the facility (PLCs, WMS, ERP, MES systems) 
  • Consulting with applications engineering / sales during the requirements and concept definition process, documenting/updating the requirements when needed 
  • Understanding customer requirements and ensuring clarity of all requirements prior to detailed design 
  • Detailed design of AMR systems using OTTO Motors products to meet the customer requirements; including layout review & design, workflow design, and attachment design 
  • Support the discrete event simulation process by being the lead SE in verifying the validity of all the inputs required for simulation and working with the customer as well as the internal sim team 
  • Create project contractual documentation such as Description of Operations, Statement of Requirements, Statement of Work, detailed design documents, test plans, acceptance plans and test/acceptance reports. 
  • Manage subcontractors/vendors on a technical level to ensure they deliver on time to the right quality. 
  • Optimizing system performance through analysis, simulation, and experimentation 
  • Project planning for the deliverables and work packages you own; 
  • Lead and support on-site deployment and integration of designed system as required 
  • Communicating technical details and status to the customer and broader project team 
  • Delivery of training to integration partners as well as end users 
  • Consulting with internal team members and integration partners on all of the above 

Secondary responsibilities

  • Authoring new product requirements based on the lessons learned from your design and commissioning activities; 
  • Working with the systems engineering team to improve project/department tools, processes, and working relationships with other departments; 
  • Support Tier 3 escalation and ensuring challenges at customers in live operations (including after hours and occasionally weekends) are resolved adequately quickly and escalate further into the organization where needed. 

This role involves travel around 35-45% internationally (mostly Canada and USA). Trips to site would typically be 2 weeks on 2 weeks off during the project integration phase.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication both internally and externally, with the ability to build long term relationships/partnerships 
  • Well-organized and responsive, with excellent problem-solving skills 
  • Planning and organizational skills (problem-solving approach, work breakdown to achieve goals, etc.) 
  • Improvement focused (driving improvement of quality and reduction of efforts and time to deliver solutions to customer) 
  • System design skills (technical writing, diagram creation, system analysis (via simulation), etc.) 

Required Background: 

  • BS or MSc Degree in Engineering, or similar technical field in an Engineering discipline (preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics and Software). 
  • 5+ years of experience commissioning & integrating industrial automated equipment or software that interfaces to the equipment 
  • Knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical and software (PLC, middleware) technologies, preferably in automation/robotics environments. 
  • Middleware software design experience to enable multi-device/system integration within facility automation 
  • Solid grasp of software architecture and IT systems 
  • Familiarity of working with Linux 
  • PLC design and integration experience 
  • Experience troubleshooting electro-mechanical systems/subsystems 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once, while still paying attention to detail 
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating activities through/with multiple departments 
  • A strong work ethic and self-starter attitude, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new technical and business problems related to manufacturing, inventory management, distribution and order fulfillment, etc. 
  • Experienced customer-facing communicator 
  • Demonstrated experience working with subcontractors/vendors/suppliers to ensure delivery of technological components to meet technical requirements. 
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, and travel to the USA, at time of application. 

Bonus points for experience: 

  • Proficiency in Epicor, Jira, Microsoft suite, Google suite 
  • Past experience with AMR/AGV systems integration 
  • Authoring and modifying software code (Python, C++, or other) 
  • Experience with inductive Automation Ignition OPC/UA or FactoryTalk (Optix) software
