Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for an Engineering Design Manager to join the team.

In this role, you will support the continued development and evolution of critical infrastructure at Berkeley Lab. The design manager will be responsible for the quality of engineering design and serve as the leader in managing the design scope, schedule and budget for large and complex long-term electrical infrastructure projects. This position will directly support design build projects focused around electrical upgrades at the Lab’s main 115kV substation, distributed 12kV switch stations and underground utility corridors throughout the laboratory. 

What You Will Do: 

  • Collaborate with external design consultants and internal stakeholders to develop innovative and cost-effective design solutions aligned with project objectives, maintaining LBNL's dedication to scientific advancement and infrastructure development.
  • Lead a diverse team through design and construction phases, promoting inclusive culture and effective communication to align efforts with project goals and LBNL's mission of scientific discovery.
  • Cultivate relationships across technical and non-technical groups, aligning stakeholders and project strategy for seamless execution to maximize LBNL's scientific and infrastructure investments.
  • Initiate design meetings, articulating project objectives and fostering shared purpose among team members to advance LBNL's scientific mission.
  • Develop and oversee project timelines and deliverables, prioritizing adherence to critical milestones in line with LBNL's dedication to efficiency and accountability.
  • Ensure quality and compliance with relevant codes and standards in design deliverables, reflecting LBNL's commitment to safety and integrity. 
  • Organize and lead design reviews, addressing technical challenges and promoting innovation for successful project outcomes aligned with LBNL's dedication to collaboration and teamwork.
  • Establish processes for timely delivery of design deliverables, driving efficiency and continuous improvement in support of LBNL's mission-driven objectives.
  • Conduct financial reviews, providing strategic insights for responsible fiscal management aligned with LBNL's commitment to financial stewardship.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and technologies, driving innovation to support LBNL's scientific and operational objectives.
  • Adhere to Design Build Institute of America guidelines for Progressive Design Build projects, reflecting best practices while aligning with LBNL's commitment to excellence.
  • Provide engineering leadership to meet project objectives and comply with DOE Order 413.3B, prioritizing safety, quality, and environmental stewardship in alignment with LBNL's values.

What is Required for Level 3:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; OR 3 years of experience and a Master’s degree; OR an equivalent combination of 9 years of education and experience.
  • Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California or ability to transfer a License from another state within 6 months.
  • Proven leadership in multidisciplinary design teams for infrastructure and utilities, in developing construction drawings, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Advanced knowledge of state and national construction codes (e.g., NFPA 70 & NFPA 70E), with the ability to engage with AHJs and establish strong relationships. 
  • Proficient project management skills, adept at applying project and program management principles to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Understanding of project lifecycles and stage gate requirements, with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to adapt to change, prioritize objectives, and navigate uncertainty effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Expertise in facilitation and collaboration, essential for presenting, explaining, and advising senior management effectively.
  • Proficient in promoting a collaborative work environment through team building and mentoring.
  • Competency in using Bluebeam Revu for collaborative design reviews, plus proficiency in MS Office and Google Workspace.

What is Required for Level 4:

  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; OR 6 years of experience and a Master’s degree; OR an equivalent combination of 12 years of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in design management utilizing design-build project delivery methods following DBIA guidelines.
  • Familiarity with Department of Energy project delivery and the application of DOE Order 413.3B.
  • Experience in managing subcontractors and third-party consulting firms.
  • Proficiency in risk management practices.
  • DBIA Certification.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The Engineering Design Manager 3 position is expected to pay $150,000- $168,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $113,088- $190,800 annually for the job classification of G31.3.
  • The Engineering Design Manager 4 position is expected to pay $174,000- $198,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $135,732- $229,032 annually for the job classification of G31.4.
  • Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
