We are looking for a Lead User Experience Designer with a passion for creating beautiful and useful products to join our team. In this role, you will apply visual and user-centered design best practice to design experiences which help people use internet-based research and library applications easily and effectively. As a Lead, you’ll work on high, profile, strategic products. You’ll also lead the visual design practice on the team, including conducting design reviews, guiding the evolution of product design systems, and helping optimize design operations on the team. If you have a strong product design portfolio and success establishing and cultivating best practices, tools and processes in visual and interaction design in a larger organization, then we would love to speak with you!

About You – experience, education, skills, and accomplishments

  • Minimum of 8 years of industry experience in interface/interaction design, digital or web design or similar field
  • Minimum of 8 years experience using visual design as a language and explaining design rationale to non-designers
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Illustrator, Axure, etc
  • Bachelor's degree in a design related field or equivalent relevant experience

It would be great if you also had . . .

  • Advanced degree in HCI, design or similar field.
  • Strong sense of aesthetics and design, demonstrated by a solid design portfolio
  • Ability to provide clear creative direction and constructive critique. Ability to present designs and communicate e effectively with senior business stakeholders about design.
  • Deep knowledge of capabilities and limitations of web technologies (HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, etc.)
  • Demonstrated expertise in user centered design, user analysis techniques, and web and mobile/responsive design best practices
  • Expertise in accessibility standards and ability to apply best practices in design

What will you be doing in this role?

  • Lead Visual Design work on large, high-profile initiatives and consistently deliver successful outcomes.
  • Lead other designers on enterprise-wide initiatives, such as designing, developing and maintaining enterprise product design standards and patterns. 
  • Organize regular team design critiques and collaboration sessions to iterate multiple design solutions to achieve the highest standards in design quality.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to business leads, ensuring product concepts are valuable, usable and feasible, and achieve desired business and branding outcomes
  • Apply user centered design methodologies (user research, personas, task analysis, use cases etc.) to develop an understanding of user needs
  • Create high and low-fidelity prototypes to support rapid design iteration and user testing
  • Help design user research projects and participates in usability testing of designs to ensure effective visual communication and ease-of-use for target user populations
  • Write brief design specs, annotated comps and/or user stories to communicate design elements (outlining font hierarchy, colors, positions and interactions) and work closely with the team implementing the designs to ensure visual standards, business, and user requirements have been met
  • Proactively identify the need for change in products and processes and propose solutions.
  • Ensure designs meet accessibility standards per W3C WAI guidelines
  • Stay current with, and appropriately apply, emerging design trends and technologies, knowledge of interactive landscape (both mobile and web-based), competitors, and complimentary products
  • Continuously improve individual and team expertise in Visual, UI, and responsive design skills and assume responsibility for modeling and teaching best practices. Mentor and coach less-experienced visual designers.

Hours of Work

  • Full time, permanent
  • Hybrid working schedule of 2-3 days/week on-site
  • Must live in a commutable distance to our Ann Arbor, MI; Philadelphia, PA or Alexandria, VA offices
