Overview

The Principal Mechanical Engineer position is a phenomenal opportunity within our Waters | Wyatt R&D to research and develop light scattering instruments.

This position requires strong experience in product design, DOE & RCA skills, data analysis and project management, and responsibility to share knowledge as a mentor to junior engineers. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be a key contributor to Marketing, Project Management, Service Support, and Manufacturing groups as novel products progress through our phase gate development process to commercialization.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to grow both expertly and to work collaboratively with project team members from research groups, manufacturing, application scientists and marketing to enhance Waters | Wyatt position in a highly dynamic market.

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects to develop mechanical/electro-mechanical/opto-mechanical/thermo-mechanical parts and assemblies in new light scattering instrument and existing instruments.
  • Evaluate new and existing intellectual property to resolve unique opportunities for Waters | Wyatt products to fill customer needs.
  • Perform test and analysis for sophisticated mechanical parts and assemblies with statistically relevant design of experiment and deduce concluding with high level of confidence.
  • Design mechanical components, sheet metal, casting, weldments, and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor. Prepare technical drawings according to current ASME Y14.M drafting standard.
  • Build, test, and validate design prototypes and pilots, shepherding throughout the whole design life cycle of mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency with tooling design; perform failure analysis and resolve the root causes for failures in manufacturing, service, suppliers, and customer site.
  • Provide sound engineering advice to product development teams throughout the phase gate development process, including the areas of risk analysis, project planning and transfer into manufacturing.
  • Prepare documentation for leading Engineering Changes. 
  • Provide engineering expertise in design practice, project leadership and mentoring of junior engineers.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering preferred.

Experience:

  • 10-15 years of experience in the design of analytical instrument products.
  • Experience in the design, development, and transfer of new products into a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in identify and resolve root causes of common failures.
  • CAD/PLM system experience, preferably Autodesk Inventor, Vault, and/or Arena.

Skills:

  • Strong hands-on skills in building prototype and conducting tests/experiments.
  • Desire and validated ability to successfully lead sophisticated projects
  • Desire and proven mentoring skills with junior engineers/coop students
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering, Design Thinking Concepts
  • Consistent track record of problem solving and learning agility
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills
  • Ability to plan and organize work load and multiple projects to achieve desired goals
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Able to work in an Agile project management environment.
  • Design of optical instrument products in the medical, pharmaceutical, laboratory and/or chemical industries preferred.
  • Design of integrated components consisting of mechanical design in combination with any of the following: lasers, optics, electronics, software, communication, electrical, RFID, sensors, system recognition capabilities (preferred).
