Guardian Australia is part of Guardian News & Media (GNM), publisher of theguardian.com. As a leading global media organisation, we are renowned for our pioneering independent journalism and our award-winning digital products.

The live news editor, evenings, is responsible for overseeing the Guardian Australia site until the day's content is complete, and for general planning, editing and commissioning alongside other desk editors.

In this role you will…

  • Help set Guardian Australia’s news agenda by planning, editing and commissioning breaking news stories for the site
  • Take responsibility for the editorial direction and appearance of website in the late afternoon and evenings, ensuring stories are displayed effectively and imaginatively including headlines, pictures and "sells"
  • Direct tone, content and direction of live blog until closed, including headlines, length of posts, resolving all legals before publication
  • Edit late breaking news and prepare stories to launch early in the morning, including communicating overnight priorities with London at handover
  • Send alerts and commission breaking news/video content as warranted, and monitor trending search terms, news sources, wires, websites, social media
  • Work closely with audience/SEO and fronts editors to maximise traffic, including for Apple news
  • Suggest explainers/analysis as required; ensure atoms are linked in stories, videos are used to maximum effect
  • Edit copy, check headlines and ensure all potential legal issues resolved prior to publishing
  • Write an accurate, detailed evening handover to ensure overnight and morning teams have everything they need
  • Deliver feedback to reporters and accept feedback from senior editors.

Knowledge and experience

  • Good grasp of national and international news
  • Experience of working in a fast changing and high-pressure environment, preferably on a news website
  • Understanding of the unique time pressures involved in digital journalism
  • Knowledge/awareness of the demands of digital platforms
  • Good understanding of digital journalism
  • Significant journalistic experience
  • Good understanding of Guardian values
  • Good understanding of media law
