We are hiring a reporter to cover trending news in New York’s Hudson Valley, based in Westchester County, New York.
This role requires energy and creativity. The focus is on “news of now,” a beat that along with breaking news empowers the reporter to explore and elevate timely issues people are talking about in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties.
We are looking for a journalist who can deliver a strong human dimension in most stories, including multiple and diverse perspectives and collaborating with our photo staff on video storytelling.
The reporter will mine social media, Google Trends, our own USA Today network and other sources to produce people-focused news and feature stories --- plus social-media posts, short videos, photos, other multimedia to engage our audience and go viral in our communities.
The reporter will cover breaking news, but this is not a police-blotter beat. We are looking for more enterprising, community-oriented public-safety journalism that includes neighborhood voices and authenticity in storytelling.
We are discerning about crime stories we cover. Overall, we are less reactive to information put out by police and more enterprising and more embracing of the needs, concerns and solutions in our cities and towns, rich and poor.
The reporter will be expected to build strong relationships to learn what information community members need/want to know. These might be people-focused features about neighborhood efforts to address crime and its impact, community culture, family life and neighborhood issues that help people share their knowledge and their lived experience. Special focus will be given to considering the whole community in our reporting and storytelling, meaning it is vital we include multiple perspectives including those of women, people of color, LBGTQ+ persons and newcomers to the country.
The ideal candidate must be able to cover breaking news, provide smart and fresh coverage of regional and statewide trends that affect our audience, and develop and collaborate on enterprise and watchdog projects that advance our New York state-wide focus on government transparency journalism
If you value, as we do, making journalism more diverse, equitable and inclusive, and are passionate, as we are, about flexing your reporting and writing muscles to help us reinvent the way media covers public safety, this is a role for you. In this beat, the reporter:
