What You Will Do

The R&D Imagineering Intern- Creative Software Development supports the development of innovative new Disney entertainment experiences through the creative application of technology, with a focus on software prototyping. This role will join project teams at Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development and take on responsibilities related to the development of prototypical software for the purposes of rapidly proving new concepts in themed entertainment. Successful candidates will possess a unique combination of technical expertise as well as an eye for aesthetics and a creative sensibility, as demonstrated by a portfolio of projects showcasing a range of skills across creative and engineering fields. The ideal candidate knows when to use or adapt existing platforms and off-the-shelf software to advance the goals of a project, but is equally comfortable developing code from scratch when called for. The candidate should be proactive in pursuing means of advancing their project, while engaging closely with the project team on both a technical and creative level. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate experience in the creative application of software in entertainment applications, theater, interactive art, or games.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • A strong interest in technology and the ability to rapidly learn new technologies, techniques, tools, software platforms and programming languages
  • Experience writing code in Python and C/C++
  • A strong creative sensibility in addition to technical ability. This background should be supported by a robust portfolio of work, examples of which might include: interactive applications, installation art with interactive elements, game design and implementation, theatrical installations that make use of interactive software, etc.
  • Mastery of design and productivity applications (e.g. Apple Keynote, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.)
  • Strong presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Time management skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks and shifting priorities amidst a dynamic and constantly changing environment of innovation
  • Strong collaborative skills and the ability to work closely with other members of a team
  • Flexibility and a willingness to quickly iterate on concepts or pivot in the light of failures or successes
  • Experience with one or more creative media applications such as Sketchup, Maya, After Effects, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with interactive media platforms and game engines such as Unreal, Unity, Touchdesigner, and Max/MSP
  • Basic familiarity with theatrical hardware and its control (lighting fixtures, DMX, automation ,etc.)
  • Basic hardware prototyping skills including the design of simple circuits, experience with platforms such as the Raspberry Pi, and microcontrollers built on the Arduino platform
  • Some experience with 3D CAD design in Maya, Sketchup, Rhino, or Solidworks
  • Experience in video/film, sound/music, and/or live theatrical production and projected media
  • Some light experience working with physical actuators including servomotors, solenoids, stepper motors, etc.
  • Light prototypical fabrication experience such as with 3D printers, laser cutters, or CNC machines
  • Experience in physical world aspects, background in theater, film or the like, or experience with some physical fabrication or robotic skills.

Education

  • Working towards a bachelor's or having comparable industry experience in either an engineering subject area such as computer science/computer engineering or a subject area related to entertainment design or creative technology
  • Additional engineering or design degree, minor, or coursework preferred (e.g. Computer Science Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design, Entertainment Design, Film, Theater, etc.)

Eligibility Requirements & Program Information

Candidates for this opportunity MUST meet all of the below requirements:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months at time of application posting OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Internship.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have not completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.
  • Possess unrestricted work authorization.
  • Provide own housing for the duration internship program in the Glendale, CA area
  • Have reliable transportation to/from work

  • The approximate dates of this internship are May/June 2024 through August/September 2024

The pay rate for this role in Glendale, CA is $40 per hour.
