The Nurse Scientist is accountable for the development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of innovative nursing research programs using scientific models, methods and concepts that support and promote the conduct of clinical research, research utilization, and professional development to improve organizational systems and health outcomes for those receiving nursing care. The Nurse Scientist assumes a complex leadership and consulting role as an expert to mentor nursing staff in the conduct, dissemination, integration, and application of research to improve professional nursing practice and patient care. S/he provides leadership in research programs related to complex healthcare issues that affect the hospital's mission, health care, and policy development.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

  • Accepts substantial and continuing responsibility for directing/managing an integrated research program.
  • Acts as a role model for standards of professional nursing practice. Serves as a mentor and consultant to nurses and other healthcare providers in matters related to research and research utilization.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across disciplines regarding the conduct of research and utilization of research findings in practice and education.
  • Develops avenues for professional achievement of nursing staff and leaders to include publishing, presentations, certification and advanced education. Assists in the development of education programs and staff development related to research and research-related activities. Collaborates in establishing and supporting a system for the recognition of research-related accomplishments and achievements by employees. Identifies current trends in clinical research, evidence-based practice and research utilization and knowledge needed by staff to remain current.
  • Keeps abreast of research and relevant clinical information to identify research needs and implement changes in policy and practice.
  • Provides leadership and resources to support the use of nursing research and research utilization as the basis for hospital-wide nursing practice. Creates and sustains an environment that facilitates the integration of nursing research to improve the delivery of care and professional nursing practice. Collaborates with nursing management and others to create the research mission and vision. Directs the integration of nursing and research. Promotes implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practice. Participates in the evolution of the philosophy, goals, and objectives of nursing service.
  • Provides leadership as an expert in nursing research, initiating research independently and collaboratively. Presents and publishes research findings.
  • Uses specialized expertise to assess, analyze problem areas in programs or clinical nursing practice. Uses relevant theory and methodologies to design, measure, and test new intereventions to clinical nursing problems. Supports and facilitates the conduct of research in such areas as clinical research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement that support individual, program, departmental and organizational objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited college or university

Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

License/Certification: CA Registered Nurse - Valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.

  • Ability to provide leadership and influence others.
  • Ability to use an analytical framework, such as the scientific research and nursing processes, to create an environment that facilitates research utilization in the delivery of patient care.
  • Knowledge of current theories, principles, practices, standards, emerging technologies, techniques and approaches in the nursing profession, and the health care system, and the responsibility and accountability for the outcome of practice.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of scientific research models, concepts, theories and methodologies, particularly as they relate to professional nursing practice and improved patient care outcomes.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $164,507.20 to $200,470.40
