Process Engineer

Summary

This job class includes Process Engineers progressing from ‘learners’ (requiring close mentoring and guidance from more senior Process Engineering staff) to ‘do-ers’ (possessing the competencies to complete most Process Engineering assignments with only occasional guidance from others). Typical assignments are in support of other process engineers on a variety of projects in order to develop process engineering judgement in preparation for progressively more responsible assignments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and plans layout of projects engaged in constructing, controlling, and improving equipment to carry out processes on commercial scale.
  • Develops process flow diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Uses computer modeling software to design processes.
  • Assists in preparing scopes of work and manhour estimates for new project work.
  • Primarily responsible for developing process flow diagrams, heat and material balances and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P& IDs).
  • Designs equipment to control movement, storage, and processing of petroleum liquids and gasses.
  • Designs process safety systems including PSV sizing and ESD control philosophy. Performs hydraulic calculations.
  • Determines most effective arrangement of unit operations exercising judgment to compromise between process requirements, economic evaluation, operator effectiveness, and physical and health hazards.
  • Participates in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) of process systems, and assists in addressing resultant findings.
  • Performs assesses system performance through stages of production to determine degree of control over variables such as temperature, density, specific gravity, and pressure.
  • Assists in development of operating procedures for new process systems and facilitating operator training on new or modified systems.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or related engineering field required.
  • Education in or experience with unit processes is preferred.
  • Typical engineers in these job classes have zero to eight years of post-graduate process engineering experience.
  • Experience with or education in engineering for Cold regions or Arctic conditions is preferred.
  • The work of this position occurs in our Anchorage, Alaska office location with infrequent visits to client office locations in Anchorage and field locations in Alaska; applicants are expected to be available for in-person work in the Anchorage area during our core business hours.
  • Previous experience delivering oil and gas projects with NANA Worley or Worley preferred.
  • Hydrocarbons industry experience preferred.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of managers, client or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra, geometry, and calculus through differential equations. Understanding of probability and statistics with the ability to apply to risk and consequence evaluations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Word word processing software; MS Excel spreadsheet software; MS Teams; the MS Office software suite: and related design and analysis software.
