Job Summary:

The Scientific Medical Instrumentation Center at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Senior Biomedical Engineer Supervisor. The successful candidate will:

  • Provide technical advice to faculty, researchers, and clinicians on the construction, design, and modification of medical instrumentation and devices in support of research, instructional, and clinical activities.
  • Conduct in-service classes for SMIC and other UHB technical and clinical personnel in the operation and service of new, state-of-the-art instrumentation being placed into service.
  • Execute internal client requests ensuring on-target, timely, on-budget, on-brand delivery.
  • Participate in creative development, and ensure the final output is on the mark; provide project management follow-through and accurate delivery.
  • Work with SMIC supervisory staff in establishing work goals and quality assurance criteria.
  • Attend manufacturer seminars and demonstrations in order to gain insight and knowledge into service techniques and instrumentation operation.
  • Present concepts to clients, obtain feedback, and translate that feedback for the project team.
  • Assist research and clinical personnel by review, evaluation, and approval of proposed clinical capital equipment purchases.
  • Review patient occurrence/incidents and hazards reports, involving patient-care medical instrumentation.
  • Perform special assignments/projects, as required, upon direction from SMlC's Associate/Director.
  • Perform modifications of instrumentation.
  • Design, develop, construct and test prototypes of electronic and/or electro-mechanical apparatus
  • Specify parts and supplies for purchase.
  • Write work reports, prepare drawings, parts lists, and other technical documentation, maintaining current general technical laboratory workbook and necessary records relating to workflow and status of job assignments
  • Interface with clinical staff and/or equipment users. Review client change requests and respond with schedule/cost impacts along with alternatives.
  • Communicate with vendors/manufacturers or manufacturer representatives
  • Participate in updating tool, equipment, and supply inventory
  • Perform data entry as pertains to work assignments and maintain work status reports up to date
  • Perform overtime as requested, on-call/recall duties on a scheduled basis, and respond to emergency calls
  • Perform supervisory duties as requested by the department Director or Associate Director.
  • Assign preventative maintenance and repair work to other senior biomedical engineers and biomedical engineers.
  • Track the progress of the assigned work orders.
  • Perform repairs, preventative maintenance and calibrations on general use instrumentation.
  • Perform acceptance testing on general-use instrumentation. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Biomedical Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience working with hospital equipment.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of service agreements, maintenance, repairs, and project management.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 8:00am to 4:00pm
