DESCRIPTION

Amazon’s Automated Marketing team is building the Internet's largest-scale Search Marketing system. This role will be focused on leveraging these technologies to optimize 3rd party ads at scale for Amazon Books. The team is responsible for a scaled, high availability system, and the algorithms that automatically generate, target, measure, and optimize tens of millions of search engine ad placements. The ad placements include Text ads, Product image based ads, and Shopping Ads. We routinely solve challenges related to large scale distributed systems and web services. We manage a continuously growing portfolio of advertisements while maximizing returns through bidding efficiency and discovery of new keywords, products and revenue opportunities. Cutting edge technology and algorithms including statistical modeling, machine learning, and data mining are the core of our business. Search Marketing drives a large portion of Amazon Books’ business, and represents a unique opportunity to drive impact on the company’s bottom line, while helping customers to find their next great read. With essentially full ownership of our own product road map, there is a large R&D component to our work, and strong programming skills together with sound business understanding and an appetite for innovation are highly valued.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining systems that enable Amazon to serve ads and free listings to search advertising vendors like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. You will apply the latest AWS technologies to develop large scaled distributed systems to provide the best advertising experience for our customers, while maximizing the return on marketing investments. While working on projects, you will get opportunities to lead other SDEs, partner with scientists, and partner with Product and Marketing Managers to translate business requirements into working solutions. You will also be involved in influencing the teams technical direction and roadmap by participating in team's planning and prioritization process. You will also be working on the operational excellence of the services owned by your team, including continuously improving the performance of applications. You will learn a variety of cutting-edge technologies (including AWS) and mobile development processes, and develop well-rounded skills such as polyglot programming, leadership, and effective project management. You’ll work full-stack with primarily focus on middle ware and backend services. Given the scale and the complexity of Amazon’s Retail website platform and architecture, our problem space is truly unique and challenging.

Key Responsibilities in this role:

  • Proficiency in Java or any other object oriented programming is required, and the ideal candidate is an expert in at least one of these languages.

  • Work closely with engineers to architect and develop the best technical design.

  • Work closely with senior engineers and product managers to improve relevancy of ads shown on search engines.
  • Optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $115,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
