Since the establishment of our Japan office in 1999 we have been the consultancy of choice for private and public sector clients. We have introduced best-in-industry practices and innovative ideas into the region helping clients to deal with sustainability challenges and to identify and reduce risks, cut costs and enhance both brand and image. Working alongside ERM’s global resources and decades of experience working with government and both local and multinational companies, we are well positioned to help clients keep abreast of the latest environmental trends and shape sustainability strategy to build competitive advantage. Japan office is currently rebuilding the service offerings and revamp the business strategy for further growth in Japan market. We are working with large Japanese multinational clients for various services including environmental and social impact assessment, and due diligence, and soil and groundwater remediation.

ROLE PROFILE

As Country Manager , you will play a key role in growing our Japan Business across its broad portfolio of service offerings. As the senior point of contact for executive leadership within ERM Japan, you will be responsible to lead commercial operations and to drive the growth and profitability of the Japan business.

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

People Leadership and Development

  • Build and maintain appropriate people management, development and retention culture (e.g., setting expectations, performance management, development planning, appropriate supervisory skills, training, succession planning etc.) among direct reports.
  • Identify the development needs of direct reports and coach them to address these needs.
  • Build relationships with other Partners in the regions and contribute to the leadership of the Japan business
  • Assist regional leaders in risk management (including financial, quality, contractual and safety risk) of proposals, projects and deliverables.
  • Create and maintain on-going communication processes with all levels of employees in office and communicate behavioral expectations, key strategic themes and office initiatives.

Client Relationship and Business Opportunities

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to grow the Japan Operations with the support of the North Asia Managing Partner and regional commercial teams. The plan should be aligned with regional and group level initiatives and support the business in meeting the targets and objectives for growth in North Asia.
  • Undertake, promote and encourage collaboration and the use of cross-company, regional, and group resources to achieve the strategic plan
  • Develop and maintain client relationships in Japan and North Asia region.
  • Develop and foster internal relationships with Partners and Key Client representatives in other regions to win and develop work.

Business Results and Performance Culture

  • Drive and actively manage the successful financial performance of the team as well as support the North Asia Managing Partner in regional initiatives
  • Provide input to the development of the annual budget and sales plan for the team with appropriate assistance from the North Asia Managing Partner and regional commercial lead.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven P&L leadership history in an EHS (Environmment, Health and safety) consulting services firm.
  • Minimum 20 years of experience in the local environmental consulting market.
  • Strong understanding of Japan markets pertaining to any or all of the following sectors of commerce: Power, Technology, Oil & Gas, Mining, Chemical, and local industrial manufacturing sectors.
  • Background of consistently achieving / exceeding annual revenue and profit targets via innovative and inspirational leadership combined with entrepreneurial flexibility.
  • Built, guided, managed, mentored, motivated and rewarded teams while setting and delivering revenue / profit targets.
  • Big-picture thinker and successful track record of building trusted relationships with target clients.
  • Possesses teamwork, communications and management skills needed for success in a rapidly growing, matrixed and changing organization.
  • Reputation for being highly ethical and working very collaboratively.
  • BS/MS in environmental science or engineering, social sciences, planning, geography, or related field.
  • Fluent in English and Japanese.
