The Vice President of Engineering is an executive role managing Collective Health’s Engineering team. We are changing US healthcare through the use of technology, and the VP of Engineering leads the team that develops and delivers that technology. Our solutions serve US employers and their employees, enhancing decision-making, health outcomes, and cost management.

In the past decade, we've developed an extensive suite including web and mobile portals, eligibility management, and high-volume claims adjudication, integrating with 3rd party enterprise solutions (HRMS/Ben Admin solutions) and 3rd party medical, dental, pharma, vision solutions, as well as specialist program solutions for maternity, fertility, diabetes, behavioral health, and many other medical domains.Upholding HIPAA standards, we prioritize high availability (>99.9%) and user satisfaction (>70% NPS), with an unwavering focus on data accuracy and security.

Leading a 120-person team, the VP will be based in San Francisco reporting to the CPTO and will collaborate with Product Management to shape the delivery roadmap and solution architecture. They cultivate Collective Health as a top destination for engineers committed to revolutionizing US healthcare, fostering collaboration, respect, technical excellence, and very high delivery quality. They will celebrate the Engineering team’s successes, and drive blameless learning from our failures.

Major Responsibilities 

  • Manage the Collective Health Engineering team. 
  • Partner with Product Management to plan release scope and delivery schedule.
  • Lead Collective Health product technical architecture and drive architectural investments into release schedule. Champion continuous focus on addressing technical debt.
  • Drive innovation around machine learning and LLMs to better serve our members and reduce our cost to deliver our differentiated service
  • Define and implement the evolution of our technology platform to support scale, performance and componentization such that we can offer our platform as a service to other payers in the healthcare space
  • Partner with Cloud Engineering team (SRE, Site Operations, Security, IT) to ensure Collective Health’s mission-critical services exceed our 99.9% customer SLA, and smoothly scale as service usage increases, coping with spikes in utilization.
  • Lead resolution of production system bugs, and drive blameless root cause analysis and system/process improvement in response to service disruptions.
  • Lead our Quality Engineering team. Drive our CI/CD methodology for rapid software advance combined with very high solution quality.
  • Partner with our Data teams to transform transactional data into analytical data and maintain a culture of data-driven decision-making.
  • Oversee Engineering recruiting to budgeted headcount.
  • Maintain highly engaged Engineering workforce. Guide continuous learning for the Engineering team and continuous improvement in our solutions.
  • Nurture and enhance our Engineering culture of candor, curiosity, and ownership, to champion innovation in employer sponsored US healthcare.
  • Build our Engineering brand as an outstanding place for career development through life-impacting mission-driven technology.

Ideal Qualifications 

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience leading large multi-site SaaS Engineering teams of >60 people. 
  • Experience growing teams through hiring. 
  • Team design and organizational structure experience, ensuring balanced growth across contributing skill sets (e.g. management, front-end eng, back-end eng, full-stack eng, QA).
  • Proven successes developing high-availability, mission-critical systems, with specific experience in scaling system for exponential growth.
  • Led development of Java microservice based solutions, delivered via AWS (or similar) cloud environments, with high system availability.
  • Consumer and Enterprise Business platform development experience.
  • 3rd party integrations experience: API-based integrations, SFTP, date pipelines and transformations systems.
  • Highly collaborative style, with experience partnering with Product Management, Cloud Engineering, Data Science, Design and User Research.
  • Experience in supporting Enterprise customers.
  • Expertise in Java, Spring Frameworks, Node JS, PostgreSQL, AWS are preferred.
  • Healthcare and/or Financial services industry experience is a plus.

Pay Transparency Statement

This is a hybrid position based out of our San Francisco office, with the expectation of being in office at least two weekdays per week. #LI-hybrid

The actual pay rate offered within the range will depend on factors including geographic location, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
