CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Queens College’s Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry seeks a College Laboratory Technician who will report directly to the Stockroom Supervisor and will primarily be responsible for setting up and running the undergraduate chemistry laboratory courses. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Preparing solutions/reagents as needed for undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratories, including introductory and advanced courses and organic laboratories.
  • Dispensing glassware/reagents to students during laboratory hours, including evenings.
  • Maintaining the teaching laboratories.
  • Checking the condition of labs and proper handling of chemical waste in the instructional labs.
  • Properly storing/handling chemicals and hazardous waste.
  • Complying with governmental safety regulations.
  • Occasional ordering, storing, and dispensing of teaching and research chemicals and glassware, record-keeping and inventory, preparing materials for waste disposal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Some lifting and moving of heavy objects is required. Experience in safe handling of chemicals, experience in preparation of chemical reagents, and a working knowledge of computer software are required. Preferred qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of safe handling of compressed gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen and helium, and possession of a C14 Certificate of Fitness from the New York City Fire Department.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science.

COMPENSATION

The qualifications and experience necessary for this position will likely put the salary in the middle range of the College Laboratory Technician salary schedule:

$64,086 - $67,707

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
