About The Team

Are you looking to have an impact on millions of users every day? On the Vision team within Disney, you’ll be helping collect data across platforms including ESPN, National Geographic, ABC News, Marvel and more. With that data, Disney can drive personalization efforts to ensure users keep coming back to their favorite apps. We can also create heat maps to better understand how people are using our applications. Finally, this data helps drive the creation of new content so that more and more continue to come back to the powerful brands at Disney.

As a Lead Data Platform Engineer, you’ll be responsible for building and maintaining a backend that can handle billions of events per week. You’ll work closely with the SDK teams and product owner to build solutions that ensure data quality and reliability. You’ll be given the autonomy and freedom to lead and guide backend architecture and processes.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the successful design, build and implementation of reliable backend systems using AWS services to handle extreme loads of traffic.
  • Be involved in code and architecture reviews for team members.
  • Own features and functionality and deliver projects end-to-end with high quality and robust architecture.
  • Use sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions.
  • Ramp up on new domains and technologies.
  • Communicate effectively with team members including frontend SDK engineers, QA, and product.
  • Participate in Agile methodology and SCRUM processes such as Sprint Planning, Backlog grooming, Daily Standups, and Retrospectives with the team.
  • Provide minimal on-call support for critical services on a rotational basis.
  • Serve as an advanced resource to other Data Engineers on the team, and mentor and coach more junior members of the team helping to improve their skills, knowledge, and productivity.

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 7 years’ experience in backend server-side development including experience with Rest services, CICD and unit testing
  • At least 7 years working in Java (or similar object-oriented language) including experience with frameworks like Spring
  • At least 5 years’ experience working with AWS for builds, deployments and monitoring including the following technologies: ECS, MSK, S3, Lambdas, ALB
  • Extensive experience with Kafka including administering clusters, streams, producers and consumers
  • Familiarity with databases (SQL and no-SQL)
  • Experience investigating technical components and taking ownership of feature development
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert-level experience with Docker, Scala, Spark and Databricks
  • Experience building systems that can handle billions of requests per week that have an impact on millions of daily users. In other words, experience with click streams/analytics.
  • Extensive experience developing with a mix of languages.
  • Proficiency with agile development methodologies shipping features every two weeks.
  • Experience with Content Personalization/Recommendation, Audience Segmentation, and/or Analytics.
  • A robust portfolio on Github and / or open-source contributions you are proud to share.
  • Experience with AWS (ECS, MSK, S3, Lambdas, ALB), Docker, Kafka, Kafka Streams, Spring, Rest services, Scala, CICD, Unit tests.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Master’s Degree a plus.

The hiring range for this position in Santa Monica, CA is $149,240.00 to $200,200.00 and Seattle, WA is $156,292.00 to $209,660.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
