Job Description and Duties

This position offers an exciting opportunity to assist with ecological studies aimed to fill scientific knowledge gaps related to continued operations of the State Water Project and ecosystem monitoring. Activities may include assisting with hypothesis testing, conducting laboratory work related to the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta, data analysis, and sample preparation for population monitoring using genetics tools. The incumbent will assist with general laboratory procedures and tasks, data analysis, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in ecological field data sampling and collection related to fish, invertebrates, water quality, genetics monitoring, equipment deployment and maintenance within the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta. The position works collaboratively within the Ecosystem Monitoring Research & Reporting Branch.

Special Requirements

Two years of college with 10 semester units in biology or other natural sciences related studies and possession of valid driver’s license. Field sampling may occasionally occur on weekends and at night.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience conducting scientific studies in aquatic ecology, water quality, genetics, or a related scientific field, including laboratory work, and fieldwork (in variable conditions). Knowledge of multiple STEM subfields is desired, such as ecology, statistics, and genetics. Proficiency with computers, particularly standard word processing (e.g., MS Office or similar) and data management software (e.g., R or similar). Ability to operate as a member of a team and good communication and writing skills are essential.
