About the Position:
Hardware Reliability is core to Juniper's business of delivering high performance networking solutions. This position contributes to all product lines and offers open-ended opportunities to develop new technologies along with associated personal development.
Responsibilities:
o For all new Juniper hardware system developments, design the appropriate reliability evaluation program, plan resources, execute the test suite, analyze the findings to determine root cause & corrective/preventative actions, and effectively communicate results to engineering team. Techniques will involve choosing the most cost-effective process such as Highly Accelerated Life Test (HALT), Design Validation Test (DVT), Reliability Demonstration Test (RDT), or other reliability processes.
o Analyze failures across different product for common trends or previously unknown vulnerabilities. Develop mitigation design rules or techniques to continuously improve the robustness of future Juniper product developments. This requires implementing the techniques of Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Design for Reliability (DfR).
o New technologies are necessary to continue to develop leading edge products. These technologies inherently introduce reliability risks. Careful analysis of the technology is required to determine risk probability and develop mitigation into the design. This work requires deep knowledge of the Physics of Failure of electronic and mechanical devices as used in telecommunications and data communications centers. Examples include
o For each new product, there is an MRD created which describes the intended features and performance. The reliability engineer must use statistical analysis skills to translate these requirements into specific measurable goals (MTBF, Early Life Failure Rate, Expected Life, etc) and provide input into the Engineering Product Description Document (PDD). The performance must be updated at each program phase completion, risks identified & mitigated, and plans created or updated.
o As part of the procurement process, Juniper customers typically ask for reliability performance metrics specific to the system being quoted or purchased. In close alignment with the account or sales lead, the reliability engineer must be able to determine the best data to provide to satisfy the customer requirements and provide in a short time (typically 1-5 days).
o When a hardware failure rate exceeds Juniper’s contractual obligations, the reliability engineer is required to determine the appropriate course of action to address the customer concern in conjunction with the Customer Service and Advance Customer Engineering teams. This involves understanding the specific customer use case, determining the root cause, developing models and/or test cases to reproduce the failure, and implementing design changes to address the issue. This requires applying techniques like Design of Experiments (DOE) and reliability modeling.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering or equivalent
Team-work orientated, patient but with a bias for action.
0-5 years’ experience
Most importantly - A passion for understanding failure root-causes and developing immediate solutions along with long-term mitigations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree with specialization in Reliability
